Report: Vols talking to Bucs' Barry about coordinator job GoVolsXtra

Meanwhile, former UT defensive end Chuck Smith is considered a candidate to be the Vols’ next defensive line coach, according to a source close to the situation.

Smith played high school football with Dooley and has made a name for himself working with NFL defensive linemen.

He is the assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets, who play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

Smith was credited with helping former Vol Robert Ayers become a first round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Smith served as a trainer/consultant for former college players before landing a position with the Jets.

Currently he is with the Jets and will have to wait until after the playoff games this weekend to make any sort of move - assuming they lose. If the Jet's win and head to the Super Bowl I think Dooley looks else where.

He has a very good history in shaping D lineman...

He played ball with coach Dooley...

What do you guys think?

I think this would be absolutely awesome ... but ... but I've been down this road before and I'm still recovering from my last trip. I'll just step aside and wait to see.

Yes to this. Great guy, great coach, never forgot the orange.

As far as Barry at DC, it seems we could either have Barry DC with Thompson assistant or Thompson DC with Garner as assistant. I think I'd rather have Garner on staff.

As a Vols fan and an Atlanta Falcons fan, I love the thought of having Chuck Smith!

What about LT for DC, Chuck Smith for DL and bringing back Dale Jones to coach LB's? Smith and Jones are two warriors that wore the orange that would coach-em up!!

He would be a wonderful addition to the staff. He can teach like crazy and I know kids would love to play from him.

I still think Dooley has someone else in mind for the DC job. If Barry was one of his main candidates, then he would have hired him already.

I think Chuck would make a great DL coaching hire. His passion for the orange and the fact that he is familiar with Coach DD would be assets. Go get him DD, we need him. As for Jones, I remember a couple of years ago he said that he would crawl on his hands and knees to Knoxville for a job and you just can't doubt his passion for the orange as well. I'd be happy to see both brought in.

Chuck Smith will be offered once the Jet's lose. Lets hope he takes the offer. I really think that he will depending on what they are willing to pay him.

I would crap in my pants if we landed Chuck. He is seen as a DL guru, a consultant to many NFL all-pros.

I like Smith, and with Garza gone room for him, LT and a new DC. I would rather LT focus on recruiting the ATL than Xs and Os.

This is why we should chill. Instead of rushing, we may get Chuck Smith once his season is over. Dooley has a plan, man!

They interviewed him in Nashville the other day and he had nothing but RESPECT for DD and said the man is a genius. They have known each other since the 5th grade and said the guy is one of the hardest workers and smartest people he has ever met.

Chuck was reserved but you could tell he as not happy about Kiffin. Said he spoke with Kiffin quite a bit via text and just not happy with how he changed the program and got away from Tennessee traditions.

He may already be gone from the Jets, they don't list him as a coach on the website.
New York Jets Coaches

Nor do they have a coach listed specifically for defensive line which is odd. Not trying to look too far into this, but it is a possibility he is hired but it just isnt public yet. Who freaking knows with the way the past few weeks has gone though.
