Hope he works out with them

Me, too. You just never know. Talented guy who never quite found his way in college...sometimes they get in the right NFL situation with the right team and wind up having a nice career. Hope this happens for Chris.

Seems to be rocking Tennessee Orange cleats still...VFL Weatherd.

Our players taken via UDA could turn out to be one the best group of non-draftees...of course everyone won't pan out, but it would not surprise me one bit to see quite a few of these guys have productive NFL careers. Weatherd being one of them...he's physically gifted and seems to be able to stay out of trouble which is far easier said than done.

its tough for a UDFA to make the team...but we did have 3 that did it last year(all three made 525k)...salary caps help and the Saints are in the worst shape at 600k over

Weatherd and McDowell are two players I wish we had on the field more, just don't know how or where. Great speed.

I was curious as to the % of UDAF who are able to make a team? Must be small or the millions spent on scouts and draft would be wasted.

There are more UFA's in the league than 1st round picks. In 2014 there were over 400 UFAs to
about 280 1st rounders.

He is a great athlete I am not surprised. I look forward to seeing if any of these guys can cut it at the next level--Chris Weatherd, Owen Williams, Marcus Jackson, Marquez North, Alex Ellis, Curt Maggitt, Brian Randolph & Pig Howard.

I read anywhere from 20-25% of a team's roster is from UDFAs..if you do the math 12 is a good average..divide that by the average career length(5 years) and each team will keep around 2-3 per year.

That is because of the salary cap. GMs and coaches will have alot of meetings concerning who they keep and how each one affects the cap.

When contract time comes for established starters, they may let a few go and keep the new lower paid UFA guys just to make the math work.

And based on the Saints numbers, I give Weatherd a good shot at making the team.

Nice shoes. But you have to remember another $150 for matching shows is not that easy to come by for most kids just leaving college.

Which brings up a question. How do these UFA graduate college while being in another city trying to make a team?

Looks like he's been asked back in June for vet minicamp.

#Saints have also asked LB Chris Weatherd (Tennessee) to return in June for vet minicamp after he participated in rookie minicamp this wknd.

Not a fan of the Saints ( Falcon fan bias here) but I hope he makes the team. Anytime a former Vol makes a roster is a good thing. Like others have said, he never did seem to get settled in here and play a lot so I hope he can show his skills now. Good luck young man.
