Chris Low: Update on coaching search

It just doesn't make sense, and could very well be our ticket to the years of coaching wheel that Bama had before finally landing Saban.
To compare our search to Bama's over the years is crazy. They only looked at one coach outside the Bear's reach and that was Mike Price. Seeing as he was "rolling baby" instead we will never know how that would have turned out.

Here's my question... how much do you think UT could afford to pay a coach per year? Then my next question is how much is to much for a coach... no matter who it is.?

Could afford and willing to pay are two completely different things.

They could afford to make the new coach the highest paid in college football. In reality, I think Hammy is trying to get someone for around $1.8mil range. I don't think he will go any higher that the $2.4mil CPF (7th highest in the SEC) was banking.

My reasoning is, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, Butch Davis is ready and willing to come if the money is right. He thinks he is better than 7th best coach in the SEC (and rightfully so) and would want to be paid accordingly. It would probably take at least $3.4mil range to get him (that is currently 3rd best). If Hammy were willing to come close to that, all we would be hearing about right now Butch Davis, Butch Davis, Butch Davis.

I want to start by saying this is my first post on this site after coming to it over the last year or so. My work computer wouldnt let me post but now I can! And just because it is someone's first post on this site doesnt mean they're not well versed in UT message board bantor (sp?) btw.

I would like to make a few points that have been bothering me after reading some of your points and have thus motivated me to actually bust my cherry on here:

I also want to preface by saying outside of Chucky (extreme longshot, granted) I dont have a favorite among the possibilities being thrown around.

1) Anyone who thinks Kiffen is the safer hire than Kelly is not thinking logically on that matter. Kelly is a proven winner as a head coach at three different levels of college football spanning many years. Kiffen is a legendary NFL defense coordinator's son who was CO-defensive coordinator for one season at USC and an excellent recruiter there as well (who cant be there? is a fair question though) So how in the world is Kiffen the safer choice? Because he was successful at USC for a couple years as an assistant? Or because he "ran good practices at Oakland"?

2) The University of TN does NOT need to hire one candidate over another because he would be able to start "mending recruiting" one month earlier than another. While i understand the importance in that month to that one class, you do not make this important a decision based on that at all! Would you guys rather have the worst recruiting class in the country for one year and bring in Nick Saban or have the best recruiting class in the country for one year and bring in Mike Shula? So please quit saying that.

3) Why does no one want Leach because he is just a little quircky?

4) Butch Davis is overrated and older than you think.

With all that said, I still like Lane Kiffen. I think he would do a good job here. Not being a hippocrite, just was playing devils advocate in why he is not the "safer choice". The only thing Hamilton needs to consider, in my opinion, is - will our new coach have it in him to line up against Meyer and Saban in a couple years and be their equal?

And to Fulmer, you were the greatest thing that ever happened to UT football but your time has past. Its time for a new era no matter who that is, I believe Hammy will make the right choice.

Thanks for letting me vent, Vol Nation.

With all the LK references in recent posts and the possibility that we will be on the search wagon again in a few months, I started looking at some of these old coaching search threads. Dirt Mcgirt made two posts and left us, or changed user IDs, but man 1) and 2) were sure prophetic even if the antepenultimate paragraph didn't pan out.

Yeah, his paragraph 1) and 2) are, sadly, prophetic. If it weren't for that 3rd paragraph from the end ("antepenultimate," huh, you trying to sound smart or something, mister?), I'd say the guy had it all going right back in 2008.

it's actually a good one to review just to get a feel for where expectations and opinions were at the time. We didn't realize the roster situation and how that would affect attracting one of those top tier guys we coveted. Fulmer did bring in a lot of highly rated prospects who didn't pan out towards the end of his tenure and it skewed perception because a lot of us assumed high rated classes = elite rosters. I think some of those elite coaches we wanted looked at what we had and took a pass.

edit. To tie this into where we are right now. IF we have a 7-8 win type season and recruiting doesn't look as impressive in Feb 2018 as it does now, I think it's important for people to consider how roster atrophy could affect our ability to land a top candidate should Butch get a sixth season.

Just for clarification it was Brian Kelly we were after and not Chip right? And MH chose Lane over him??

Cant believe most people in this thread wanted Kiffin over Peterson and Kelly.

Chris Peterson has never shown any interest in any job in the southeast. He didn't Tennessee, he didn't Florida and he isn't going to. He is a Northwest kind of guy and is probably at one of only a handful of jobs (Oregon, maybe Oregon State) that he'd consider. Hiring him ranks with hiring Ara Parseghian instead of Bill Battle. It wasn't gonna happen.

In 2008, Butch Kelly wasn't all that. You can make a case he still isn't. He wasn't a NFL head coach, wasn't a national name and he had more baggage from other jobs than Kiffin. And we didn't have a clue how immature Kiffin was and obviously still is.....

Yeah we didnt know that for sure about Peterson in 2008. I agree he wouldnt have came here but is obviously the best coach of the 3.

Say what you want about Kelly, he has had more success than Kiffin.
