The fireman, and people of the town had no idea what they were getting into or how dangerous the situation was.
not that you can really spoil this show, but there's a scene in the 2nd episode that depicts a lot of what you desdribe here. eerie as hell.I haven't watched this yet, but I was alway moved reading the accounts of how things went down. The firefigthers were just doing their jobs and had no idea they were walking into their deaths by mere exposure. Also the accounts of people that went out on their balconies and such to watch and having no idea how much radiation they were being exposed to.
There's a website maybe still out there that was a journal of sorts by a lady whose father had clearance to go into the areas and she went on a motorcycle trip through the whole area. She wore a radiation detector and all to keep her warned when levels got too high. She took a ton of photos and explored the town and it was such an incredible thing to look at. The pictures showed how life literally stopped that day when they evacuated. She went into apartments and homes and you still see the calendars on the wall and their pictures and belongings eveywhere. And she goes into schools and all the toys are out and even kids shoes are still in their cubbies. Of course now everything is overgrown and broken down but otherwise it's like a town frozen in time.
EDIT: Found it, or an archived version. This was from 2003-2004 and originally was on an Angelfire site I think. The navigation is a bit wonky.

I am not familiar with it. Tell me about it.
In the show they show firefighters picking up pieces of the nuclear reactor core and wondering what it is..I haven't watched this yet, but I was alway moved reading the accounts of how things went down. Also the accounts of people that went out on their balconies and such to watch and having no idea how much radiation they were being exposed to.
