Once again, you provide no other example. I like Heupel and think he is a good coach. However, he has had some things that he is not great with. He is not a great road coach. He is not a great clock manager. He holds onto assistant coaches too long before making a change. He has also done some poor personality evaluations on guys that were supposed to be major impact players (Nico, Boo, Chaz). Criticizing consistent bad decision-making in an area doesn't mean I am a Heupel hater. I was totally on Heuepl's side through the Nico debacle. I completely understood him kicking Boo off the team. However, now I am stuck, wondering how we are going through this again with Chaz, as is literally every college football reporter. Once again, y'all think it's blind allegiance or nothing towards the athletic department. Makes no sense to me

Ole Miss had a somewhat similar situation with Trinidad Chambliss being thought to leave for LSU during their playoff run. He ultimately stayed at Ole Miss but it was very distracting for them and was in the media constantly. Nico’s exact situation will never happen again because NCAA changed the rule timelines. I know it’s a bit of a stretch but I think teams have guys being tampered with every year and coaches discuss this publicly, kinda similar to Boo

Nico and Boo weren’t transfers so character and other risks are a part of the process with high schoolers too.

Do the best due diligence possible and then it’s up to the coaches whether a player (including family, agent, handlers, etc) are worth the scholarship and money.

At least with Chambliss, it made sense for him to be conflicted because he wanted to follow his coach. Our guys just straight up decided they weren't gonna show up, then got kicked off the team. Chambliss was deciding whether to follow the guy who made him famous or stay with a school he liked. Nico, Boo, and Chaz were given great deals and situations, then decided to leave anyway for objectively worse situations irrationally. Just makes you wonder how we got caught up with people who are obviously so unstable to start with.

The weird thing about Heupel is that he can overlook red flags with these guys to bring them onto the team, but he has no problem parting ways with them when they become difficult, even as starters. Everyone in East TN knew Boo was a questionable individual (high school and college), and I find it hard to believe that Heupel dealt with Nicos' family for 3 years without even a little concern, the same with Knowles and Chaz. I just think our staff feels like they can work around those red flags, and we have gotten burned instead.

I’m not upset. I’ve noticed a pattern in which we fill out the team with solid characters and take a chance on a very few extraordinary athletes. We rarely hear about the ones who made it work and we cut the ones who cause problems - as it should be.

Going back a bit the QB that signed first big money deal with OSU then transferred to Texas seems to fit.

Ewers only went to Ohio State because TX had funky NIL HS rules that wouldn't let him take his big NIL deal in HS and reclassify to enroll at TX.

He was never going to Ohio State to play at tOSU and transferred as soon as possible.

According to LWS that is supposedly the real story. I've also heard that from a few others I trust. And there's very few I trust and actually put any stock into what they say. I haven't heard anybody legitimate confirm the Chaz and Owings disagreement. You know our idiot fanbase, with many choosing to pick the worst rumor to believe instead of actually waiting for something proven to come out. Then grown men bashing 19 year olds and of course instantly assuming the worst and taking that as the gospel. Texas Tech and Sorsby's case is worse than anything we've had to deal with.. The only one I blame Heupel for is Boo. He was a head case in HS and something was eventually going to come up with him. Was just a matter of when and what.

Just like some of our Dildo fans blaming Knowles for Coleman. No way 3 Coach's and numerous players would help bring someone with problems to their new school/job. Chaz NEVER had any issues is HS nor at Penn St. How can any Coach predict how a player will react after ongoing symptoms from a head injury? I'm with LWS and the couple others that believe this, Chaz probably never plays football again. I'm really not sure he ever enjoyed playing football, he's always enjoyed basketball more.

And I am including arrests as head case issues.S.Carol just had a RB dismissed for multiple felony charges, we all know Ga's drama with their arrests. This isn't quite the same, but still a black eye for LSU with how they pursued Demond Williams. Jadon Rashad's issue at Florida over his NIL. The Ole Miss tampering of a Clemson player was all over the news. Alabama with Badeiko and that drama. Not SEC, but a similar situation at UNLV 2 years ago. Mensah with how he left Duke after Miami threw a huge NIL offer at him. This $hit happens everywhere and will just continue getting worse and worse.

Very well said! The Negative Vols are always going to whine and complain about something. All 3 were recruited and offered by big name Schools and I'd bet the same thing would have happened somewhere else. Boo would be the only one that anyone could even make an argument that was Heupel's fault. Boo had issues in HS, but he also saw the opportunity to help him mature and grow out of that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't even remotely blame him for trying to see past a troubled HS kid and hoping the right situation helps him become a man. Boo's crazy Mom didn't help at all and actually made things worse.

We aren't the only ones with NIL issues and we definitely won't be the last. Like you said, this is just going to get worse and worse. Look at Kiffins drama with Williams and then with Leavitt. Miami and Duke with Mensah. Rashada and Fla. Dabo and Ole Miss's Coach and the tampering accusations. I'm sure there's a bunch more I'm not remembering.

Excellent post Jason. That’s a mic drop and should end the debate with the troll. The last sentence is key. It’s going to get worse.

As far as Boo goes, I think Josh was in a no win situation. I’m sure he knew the history but he would have taken grief from a significant portion of the fan base if he hadn’t taken him. Most coaches think they can fix anyone. I’m just glad he and mom are now Neon’s problem.

This will be the last I say on this. Boo was the only one with any kind of reported issues in HS. In your words, if Heupel didn't properly evaluate their character ( which is almost impossible to do without having prior issues), does that also mean every HC that recruited and offered Boo and Nico were also bad at it? I'm not mentioning Chaz, if he had been an issue at Penn St, zero chance Knowles and his assistants that came would have vouched for him. It just wouldn't happen, especially knowing the type coach and character Knowles expects out of his players..Any of our idiot fans blaming Knowles are literally looking for a reason to complain.

Yes sir! Look at all our fans that were excited we got Boo and like you said, and they would have bashed Heupel if he had stopped recruiting him.There's no pleasing some of our fans. If these 3 are our worst NIL cases, then we are doing ok.

I wonder if Sanders at Colorado is getting the same treatment. Boo has a history and he still took him. To me, that makes Sanders way worse of a judge of character.

I think everyone knew Ewers was just going to Ohio State to get around TX law and Ohio State made zero effort to keep him, nor was the NIL coming from their collective.

He had the NIL lined up from some card company before he committed to Ohio State and not connected to them but he couldn't keep it and enroll at a TX school.

It didn't cost tOSU anything but a scholarship. They knew what was up from the start.

Good Stuff! Ill say it again, if your system works for everyone in your program but 1 or 2 players. Then the system isnt the problem. Im not gonna blame Heupel for Boo. Knowing the kid had problems in Highschool. The hope was with the right structure around him in college it could help him. Alot of kids come in with Boo's issues and it works out fine. What i do blame Heupel for is letting him stay on the team last year.

Absolutely! He did let him hang around a year too long. But give him all the credit in the world for giving him a few chances. Some just can't be fixed, especially with an enabling mother.

I think he's finally starting to evolve and go outside of his comfort zone with the defensive changes and change in how he recruits and will use the portal. Now, if he can figure out how to win on the road and improve in game adjustments. Also, continuing to adjust his offense and make his players more NFL ready.

Seems the meddling parent(s) is the one constant red flag for signing a recruit that will cause problems for coaches and team no matter the sport.
