I know there are alot of 3rd and Chavis people on here but I always liked him.

He didn't leave UT either. He was thrown to the wolves so we could get Kiffin. Yeah, that was a smart move.

Even when CPF lost ole Cut and we had Sanders and the clawfense his D kept us in games. We would have went down hill much faster if he had of left with ole Cut the first time in 98.

Anyways, it was nice seeing him up in the press box and him getting the win. It was his D schemes that forced Bama into a long field goal in overtime.

Nice win Chavis!!!

You wanted to be a VFL ...

Good post!! I'm still a cheif fan, glad to see him doing well. And yes I agree that his D kept us in alot of games when he was here and our O was sputtering. But you can't reason with a negavol!!!!

I agree, like all Vols, I have been mad at some 3rd and Chavis. But really happy for the guy tonight.

Would love to have him back. (don't mean to open a can of worms, just saying)

I saw an interview where chief got teary eyed talking about UT during the LSU game week. Guy is a VFL wearing purple and yellow. He seems to have fixed the only weakness I remember him having, the prevent/deep zone on third and long and in tight games that we were up. WTG big chief!

I'm starting to think 3rd and Chavis was really more like 3rd and Fulmer. Then again, one would almost have to try to fail with a defense this loaded with talent.

Heck... I'll go further, bring back Adkins to coach the O-line! We've now trotted out every running back we have and nobody is bustin' loose 'cause there isn't any where from which to burst.

I'm going to go ahead and agree with this. I mean, yeah the guy clearly has some talent as a defensive coordinator but when you've got talent like LSU is pulling in on a yearly basis it's bound to make your job a hell of a lot easier. Lets not forget the blowouts we were subjected to near the end of Fulmers tenure (20-59, 17-41). Still, wish him the best. I'm just not so sure if he was our defensive coordinator still that we'd be in a radically different situation than the one we find ourselves in.

I believe it had more to do with third and CPF as sgm stated.

I think CPF told him to not play aggresive when we were up.

And the blow outs toward the end had alot to do with our d being on the field all game long.

I'd rather have his athletes and Wilcox.

Coaches screw up with great talent all the time. Chief is one of the top 5 defensive coaches in college football. Give him the credit that he deserves.

I always liked Chavis too, but come on. He's having the success he's having now because of the elite talent that other coaches are recruiting for him. This is the same guy that started the ball rolling for Fulmer's downfall by letting Kevin Freaking Craft shred his defense for a whole half. Let's not pretend that he's a master tactician or anything.

Players have bad games and coaches do, also. He wasn't the reason that Fulmer lost his job. He was more the reason that Fulmer was employeed for the amount time that he was.

Fun Fact: Chavis once let a family of squirrels live in his mustache for 3 and a half years.

Apparently, they all still keep in touch.

forget that his defense had 4 picks, the vols punted 7 times thanks to cromptons 19 of 42 passing, lincoln missed three field goals and you could almost blame that game on Chavis

Not saying that Chavis got Fulmer fired or anything; just that we saw enough of Chavis over the years to know that he wasn't winning because of his outstanding schemes. Urban Meyer in particular had his head spinning in circles as soon as they got in the same stadium.

Chavis has better talent now than he had most of his tenure in Knoxville. That helps a lot. And it wouldn't surprise me if having The Hat as his head coach makes a difference too. There's nothing conservative about Les Miles's football teams.

Sounds like you quit watching at halftime and just caught the box score in the paper the next day.

That's just it. It's almost as if some people refuse to like the guy. Chavis was and still is a great coach. There is a reason that he is still coaching but Fulmer is not.

Of course, Fulmer had a say in what was going on in the game. I believe that he has more freedom with Miles and we are seeing what he can do with that freedom. One has to look at the overall product that Chavis put on the field and not pick a game here and there and use it to say that he is not that good. Hell, we can do that with any coach. If that was true then we could take tonights game and use it to prove that Miles is better than Saban. There were a few coaching blunders by Bama tonight but we know that Saban is better than Miles.
