There is already some talk about current UT defensive coordinator John Chavis being retained if the Vols hire an offensive-minded head coach.
The UT money people aren't real keen on completely turning the program over to outsiders.

GoVolsXtra - Ask Griff

I think I just threw up a little bit

guess that would mean that our DB Guru Slade would have to stay as well.

Doesn't bother me. Our Defense is ranked 8th in the nation in total Defense and has been on the field 2-3 times as much as our offense.

I think this will depend on the HC we get. The new HC could state that he wants to name his own staff. It will be interesting to see....

believe it or not, but Im beginning to really like the idea of Kiffin and Coach O as d-coord

For the time being, if Chavis believes he is staying could someone ask him to quit losing recruits? If he can't keep them until the new coach has been named, well, there's your answer.

In actually, I like Scott or Drayton in the 'keep the commits' or hit the road assignment whichever one can get Giles back. Who cares about losing the 3-stars? I'd like to see the new coach upgrade the class anyway.

I would be willing to bet that if we had even a mediocre offense our Def would be ranked 1 or 2 in total def. Imagine if we were actually score points and make opposing offense try even harder to win I would bet our Dbs would have had 2x as many pics.

Minus the UCLA debacle at the end of the game (and perhaps one or two others... who cares to remember at this stage), the defense has not been a a problem this season.

And, I agree, that if we had an offense of any sort, our defense would be among the most respected in college football.

you're kidding right? What team with a good offense have we actually stopped this year? I will answer it for you, none. We couldn't stop UCLA, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, USCe all we could stop was UAB, Miss St, NIU, and Wyoming. So you think this makes Chavis a great defensive coach. Please stop kidding yourself by looking at those status cause they are not accurate to how are D has actually played.

And so many complained about an offense that scored 30ppg last year. Give us last year's offense with this year's defense, and we'd have a real team in Knoxville.

And, I am not saying we should have kept Fulmer. I gave up on that after UCLA. But, you can't blame this season on Chavis and the defense.

There is no denying that Chavis has had some pretty good defenses over ther years. I just do not like Chavis' defensive philosophy. I don't like the "bend but don't break" style he plays. I don't like the fact the he seems to like under-sized, speedy linebackers as opposed to not as fast, but bigger, more physical line backers. Plus he does not blitz as much as I would like.

I don't like the bend but don't break stuff either AND I didn't like Cut's conservative play-calling. But what I learned well this year is that we can do a whole lot worse.

i think one of the biggest problems for the defense are the lack of coverage sacks. get rid of slade. more coverage sacks. we've had the players (db) for years.

They're ranked 8th in the nation against the schedule they were delt. We did stop USCe, our offense gave up 2 td's. If you've ever played football, you know how important it is to get rest on D. Our offense is the reason the D is down to #8. The D also held Auburn to 1 score, enough to win, but again the O was terrible. You're the one kidding himself, Chavis knows how to coach D.

I agree there's room for improvement on the defense, but it's light years ahead of the offense we fielded this season. I can't ever remember a UT team in which I felt we had a better chance of scoring when the defense was on the field.

And, the most optimistic I ever was on offense (including the 4th play in the series version) was when we were punting the ball since there was always a chance the PR would muff it.

i totally agree. our defense against the lack luster schedule and eric berry were the only highlights. clawson slade the online coach, bye! top to bottom, chavis is just the first one safe.

We might have played a bit better than USCe but there offense sucks as well. I understand about playing defense and getting rest but the defense couldn't stop anyone in the first half when they weren't tired. Also you can take the same approach that if the defense had stopped the offense then they wouldn't have been on the field as much either. While I put the blame on this season's failures squarely on the offense's shoulders the defense hasn't been that good either.
