Ever since 02, Chavis has been down on the field. Is it time he returns back the the press box?? We haven't had a real dominate D since he has been down on the field.

Thoughts??

I believe he needs to be back up. Why did he come down? It doesn't seem he communicates a whole lot with the other defensive coaches during the game. He is by himself for most of the game Saturday. It doesn't take rocket scientist to know you can get a better view things from above. I know there were some defensive coaches in the booth, but he should be there, I think.

Yeah, he should definitely be up in the press box. You can actually see the alignments and what not way better from the press box.

From what I remember, he came out of the booth at halftime of the UT/MIAMI game in 2002 I believe....UM was handing us our collective butts and Chavis wanted to be with his defense.

I havent seen him there since

It was the Florida game because Grossman handed our butts to us 30-13. I remember it because CBS made a big deal about it as well.

Seems that I remember that UF game as the game that Clausen went 3 straight plays, inside our own 5 that he couldnt take the snap from center...fans were booing him by the time our punt team was walking on the field.

You know, you might be right. Was that the fumbled-snap bowl in the rain at Neyland when we had Florida guys just breaking weak arm tackles and scampering for big gains?

Ok We are in agreement on that...and we seem to be in agreement it was against a team from Florida LOL

But Im still not sure why Chavis would want to be with his defense when the UT offense is stinking up the place.

That was the 8 fumbled day by our team. It sucked to be watching that game, the most painful memory I have as a Vol fan other than the Manning debocle.

He went down there to help motivate the entire team to play better. It helped in the 3rd quarter for all of 5 minutes until the rain came back.

After doing some checking up...it probably was the UF game...says it was a scorless 1st quarter and UF scored their 24 first half point in the final 6:30 of the half...thats a great reason for a DC to come out of the booth.

it seems to me that a coordinator, defensive or offensive, would want to be where he can see what's going on. otherwise, he has to depend on somebody who is and can tell him. in other words the coordinator needs a coordinator to do his job for him. just what the hell is he supposed to accomplish traipsing up and down the sideline?

I remember the florida game in 2002 as well. Chavis came down out of the press box because he wanted to look his defense in the eyes. A lot of good that did!

I think the recruiting bonanza of the 90's caught up with Chavis in 2002. That was the year I noticed a few games where we just did a lot of arm tackling. the next few years were slightly better, but you still had occasions when you would just scratch your head at the missed tackles. Part of that (we were told) was that they didn't have contact in a lot of practices because they wanted to prevent injuries. I think last spring is when they came out and said they would be gin to have more contact and focus on the basics.
