Hey guys just curious what kind of job you all thought John Chavis will do at LSU. Do you think his defense will be as good as what pelini fielded there? I noticed sometimes Chavis' secondaries would play a little soft. Just wanted to pick your brains since we (Bama) still have to deal with him every year.

i believe he deserves a lot more credit than he gets. although it did seem like 3rd downs were converted regularly, it isnt hard to imagine that some of the past years could have been much worse without him. they will be just fine with him there. and who knows, with the talent les miles has got, his defense could be even better.

With Chavis, it's better for your offense to have 3rd and 12 than 3rd and 2. Keep that in mind.

His scheme works really well if he has great dline play. Moreso than others it seems, his success is dependant on QB pressure. I think he should field some good defenses at LSU since LA seems to consistently turn out some of the best dline talent in the nation. Plus, you can always count on him producing top notch linebackers.

Chavis will do what he has done at UT. He will field a top 10-20 D based on what talent LSU has on the D-line. The schemes work, but even he admits it is predicated on talent. Fine coach in every regard, but miracle worker he is not.

Chavis is a fine coach. Given LSU's defensive talent, they'll contend for the West. He seems to be a very good fit in Baton Rouge.

I think he is one of the better DCs in the country. I am not so sure that UT actually upgraded with Monte. Don't get me wrong, I hope he did.

IMO, Chavis is one heck of a DC.

Or pretty much any pass underneath his safeties who are so far off the ball they can't be seen on film...

:lolabove: That is sooooo true!

Plus, and maybe it's just me, but the biggest knock I have had against Chavis over the years is his seeming inability to think on his feet and make any real defensive adjustments if the initial gameplan doesn't work. I watched Spurrier absolutely pick his defenses apart year after year when he was at Florida. I also watched Urban Meyer do the same thing the last few years. His defenses are absolutely built on the notion that they need to "out athlete" the opposing offense if they are to be successful.

Chavis is a decent DC, develops terrific linebacker talent, and seems to put together a good gameplan initially. However his biggest knocks are that once teams adjust offensively, there never seems to be any type of counter measure from Chavis. That and his defenses never seem to be able to stop 3rd and long.

Having said that, with the talent pool they have at LSU, they will most likely make Chavis look good. Perhaps even better than he looked at Tennessee.

Chavis can be a top notch DC but when the game is on the line sometimes it's best to just walk away because he will find a way to lose. He does not know how to adjust in a game at all.

Here are a few games where he played soory defense when it was needed.

2007 Bama-DJ Hall tore us up all game and he just kept playing the same defense. Put man coverage on him or something

2001 LSU SEC Champ game-Matt run up the middle mauck. put a freaking QB spy on him for god sakes

2001 UGA-why you play that mustang package at the end of the game is beyond me costing us the game.

2008 UCLA-why did he just let that tight end get open everydaown is beyond me. my wife even knew what the next play was and she doesn't watch football

2007 UK almost cost us the game playing that mustang light defense package trying to cruise.

LSU welcome to the famous mustang package and the third and chavis. you better be way up or he will cost ya tha game.

I could put in more game examples but I need a book.

So far the sports writers and analysts have been praising what he's doing w/ the defensive side of the program. Says the players are feeling it to and are excited/motivated and really set on a goal. Alot of the writers have really said it's looking good and that they expect the LSU defense to be strong/ really successful w/ him running it

Any chance we take a knee on 1st down and then spike the ball on second to get Chavis to put the Tigers in the mustang for the ensuing 3rd and 12 play?

If football only allowed 3 downs to get 10 yards, then Chavis could have gone down as one of the best defensive coaches of all time.
