Not to be a downer, but having the college option is a nice bargaining chip in contract negotiations is it not?
I think, when it comes to MLB drafts, there is an understanding between the players and teams in the first couple of rounds...if you're not wanting to go, you let the MLB teams know. They can't waste a pick on a kid wanting to go to college, so if that kid wants to play MLB someday, he'd better be a straight shooter.

It goes like this…

Player: I need THIS money or I go to college.

Team: We’ll take a high school player and wait up a couple years, up to you…make us pay and don’t get hurt.

If you do get hurt, or it doesn’t pan out we’re gonna get ya for cheap…either way, works out great for us, chase the dream kid.

Yes, but after the 1st 2 rounds, the slot value goes down substantially, and after the 10th round, it's basically impossible.

He will undoubtedly get drafted. Probably in round 17 or something like that and some team will offer the max their draft budget will allow, but it's unlikely to be more than 500k.

Everyone has a price. Teams get a good feel for what that price is prior to the draft. If they can't come to an agreement, the team gets an additional pick the following year around the same range but they lose the slot value for their draft budget for this draft, which can throw a huge wrench into your plans if you were planning on that player going under slot.
