God bless him. Loved watching him play ! Man, it's just beyond sad what some of these players and thier families are going through. It just makes you appreciate them that much more.

Very sad, and cases like this will the ultimate end to tackle football. This sport has about 7-10 years left before it is stripped down to some variation of 2 hand touch. Don't laugh, there are elected officials in Washington who believe its society's job to protect people from themselves regardless of their free will choices. There will be a major push to end tackle football it is current form over the next 5-7 years.

I hate this. These stories make me legitimately want to stop watching football... I think about how immature I was cheering for all of those big hits and am absolutely embarrassed for encouraging them

There are dangerous jobs everywhere, while there should always a point to stress safety the game will always be around. Actually I think the last several years have been better, what your seeing now is results from when many of the hits that caused these things were legal. But you can't never prevent every injury in any sport. If people are willing to play that's there right, there may be some that want to take the right away but they will fail. Nobody is making anybody play, and I don't wish harm to any player. But if they really want to make it safe they can for one do a variety of things.
Make players were all their protective gear and make them wear bigger shoulder pads, I see receivers running around with virtually no shoulder padding at all. Heck even some lineman where lighter pads. The head to head thing has been monitored well over the last few years and I think future studies will show we have improved in that area. Also there is always room for improvement in the helmet overall much like nascar this will continue to get better over time. Of course there will be some wanted to always eliminate football but there is other sports just as dangerous and trying to take away the game Americans love is not going to happen with a HUGE FIGHT, no way no how. There are ways to keep the game safe and still be football. GBO!!!!

And there will be a bigger push back. Like I said in my above post we are seeing the results from when most of the types of hits that cause this were legal. Head to head is no legal now and I think the players have done a good job adjusting. Over time equipment will get better and there needs to be a emphasis and players wearing all their gear and I think a certain size should pad should be required for all positions. Too many players wearing virtually no shoulder pad now. Also continued improvement of the helmet will be the next step in the near future. GBO!

Hate to say it but I think you are wishful thinking. Fade is more than likely right as people are already fighting for more regulations. You read this story how can you blame them?

First of all, sad to see this about Garner or anyone else in this circumstance.

But, and kind of piggybacking on fade's post earlier, we have to (1) recognize what someone is doing out of their own free will and (2) accept that as human beings we enjoy some stuff that we really shouldn't.

Steve Irwin messed with dangerous animals. He died because of it.

Dale Earnhardt liked to drive really fast. And I can't tell you how many people I have spoken to who watch auto racing for the wrecks. They don't care which dude wins this week. They want to see the car flip over 3 or 4 times and then burst into flame.

We watch boxing and MMA and love watching someone get knocked out. In fact, the more impressive the knockout, the more we like the guy.

When there is a wreck on the highway, people slow down to look at it. The nastier the wreck, the slower they drive and the longer they look.

take some time to look up "epic fail" on youtube and watch people do stupid stuff and get seriously injured while their friends' first reaction while standing around is to laugh at it.

Does that make all of us horrible human beings? Maybe. I don't know. But, the vast, vast majority of people do these things. And of course, none of us want to see anyone get hurt. We just want to see all of this stuff and everyone be ok and, of course, it doesn't work that way.

And when the next thing happens, we'll all be there watching. And if a Tennessee safety lights up a Florida or Alabama WR coming across the field and causes a fumble, you'll give your buddy a high five.

Don't feel guilty about it. It's who we are.

Pretty good take as always.

Sucks for CG.
Hate to see it happen to anyone.

My problem is, because I can list a lot of things, is why are some dangerous things people engage in ok, but football must be stopped.

People die every year horseback riding or skydiving. Just an example.

I am not disagreeing with you but you don't hear about horseback riders, fighters, Nascar, having brain issues at rate. Sure I would football to last a longtime but reality is it may not.

I don't want to see anyone injured badly, but high fiving a big hit does not make one a bad person. The life is full of bad hits one way or the other, one the other hand life is and can be full of great moments. We are all going to die, the sport is trying to as safe as it can be. Again we are seeing now what happened to people from playing in earlier days when head to head was not monitored. There are many things that can be done short of just quitting football, for nobody has too play it is up to the player and the parents of younger players. If anything football has gotten safer over the last few years we just want see them results for another 10-20 years. Despite some politicians and anti-football people that would prefer to ban it, that is not going to happen without a huge fight. This is the land of freedom and free will, if a person wants to play a sport they should be allowed. Heck UCF is twice as dangerous, they get hit in the head repeatedly without any protection. They will have to confront UCF before they will ever touch the NFL. Again safety should always be improving but in no way is anything ever injury proof. GBO!!!

This is awful. He didn't know about this when he started playing. None of the players really did then. Praying for him and his family. Hopefully they can figure out a way to help guys like him.

It's adrenaline. But all violent sports will have some sort regulation or more regulation. The question is where does it become free will? I hate helmet laws. I am a grown man. I shouldn't have to wear a helmet but the government says so. Another thing to ask is will insurance to continue to cover these sports in the future?
