Change of Heart. George MacIntyre deserves to start.

Whoever starts early has no guarantee they'll keep starting. I suspect if and when the first loss or two comes, it will depend entirely how the team looked in those Ws. Heupel is in no position to keep trotting a losing QB out on to the field with a bunch of games left on the schedule. He'll look for lightning in a bottle like all coaches do. It's better to start and lose with the QB of the future out there gaining experience as the fan base can live with that a whole lot better than losing with a guy no matter the experience who has been on campus for a while.

The best quarterback deserves to start. I think G-Mac has the best chance at this point but until they go through spring and fall nothing is a guarantee. Faizon is going to be a great player at some point I believe, but he is young for his age to begin with and it would not be fair to him to expect him to come in and start. It doesn’t mean it’s not possible but G-Mac should be ahead from a knowing the system standpoint plus G-Mac was a high rated talent himself. Even though he doesn’t have a ton of on field playing time in film study he has a big lead. The portal pick up I honestly don’t know a ton about him. I expect he has some good attributes and will help make it a battle. But I will be shocked if he wins the job. But if he wins it on the practice field so be it. But sitting here in February, I expect it to be G-Mac.

My guess going into spring practice the first few days will be GMac, Brandon, Steup just based on seniority and time in TN system, Brandon got to practice during Bowl Game practices since he was an early enrolle but after that it should be on who does the best, no matter who it is.

Now that the Aguilar situation is behind us, I’m behind GMac 100%. While Faizon is likely the future, the likelihood of him beating out GMac is slim. GMac has a huge advantage in knowing the offense and he’s an extremely talented guy and from what I’ve heard, at this moment he’s now closer to 210 than he is to 200. I saw before and after photos of the Indiana QB before the S&C coach got a hold of him and there was a huge difference. Our new S&C coach is going to put the weight on GMac to make him more durable. Call me crazy but I’m thinking he’ll be 215ish (but still under 220) going into the season.

I’m hoping GMac makes a lot of folks eat their words.

If you start a Freshman or a first time starter ever in college ball especially in the SEC the outlook could go bad. Michigan did and won 8 regular and Bowl game so 9. Underwood was supposedly the best young first time starter QB last year in College. So I'd say Vols ceiling in SEC is 8 wins and floor is 4 wins. No playoffs this year for certain, will be a rebuilding year IMO.

We have to wait and see how the defense pans out. We were so bad last season that I expect to see improvement, even with the Knowles system learning curve.

GMac certainly has the talent. All we can do is hope that he has the understanding. If Macintyre proves to be ahead of the curve with his processing, then Faizon may not stick around long enough to be our starter.

Last year, the early feeling when Joey A got here was: He may have game experience but Merk has the time in the system.

There was some discussion that Joey A didn't get a $1M+ NIL to sit the bench so perhaps we need some sleuthing into what NIL Ryan Staub got to come to UT.

Just a thought. He seems to have gotten jumped by Kaidon Salter, remember him?, but Staub has two years left. If he's getting good money, are we just tossing a million to QB3s now?

Good point. I'm pretty confident that Staub didn't come here with plans to be QB2 or QB3. Whoever we start, I hope it's the outcome of an honest and robust competition.

I mean, he was mostly QB2 to Salter and UT is definitely a step up in both player talent and competition, so maybe he did come to just learn as much as he could from Josh before starting a career as a coach (most likely the Gaston Moore route.)

I wonder what we're paying him to sit because that should give some clue into how the staff values him.

Agree... JH is safe, but probably a little uneasy about 2025, where his offense was top shelf and D was horrid. His job is self-preservation to get past year #2 in "gap years". Last year was a gap year, but JA filled in so well, he kept us out of the cellar of SEC. No small task, but if D comes back to form in middle/upper SEC level, then, in reality, he needs a QB which is not necessarily "all SEC" caliber, but a QB who can manage the offense and not turn the ball over...I think we're overlooking the fact that by the time GMac potentially starts his first game, he'll have been thru 2 spring practices and been w/ the team for over a year and half. So, I think he's the most obvious choice. A capable game manager in JH's system will yield upper tier results in SEC, but will also depend upon moving the sticks with a capable rushing attack (which seems to be something a JH offense is usually pretty capable of)
Agreed. That’s what makes it so interesting. GMac has technically “been in the system” going on 2 years. He’s not fresh like the true freshman in Brandon F. That matters.

That’s not accurate. Tennessee was recruiting at high level years before Peyton arrived. You’re discrediting the Andy Kelly era that led to Heath.
I believe that the recruiting classes of 95 and 96 were helped a good deal by Manning. Fulmer was promising players a national championship if they came.

Heupel needs 7 wins to save his job.
Can we stop with the "save his job" mentality? The guy has done more than any coach since Fulmer to improve the program. The "If he does or doesn't" point of view is simply not reality.

There are so many leading indicators that CJH is building this program the right way and will ultimately be successful. No organization goes through the change our beloved Volunteers have without setbacks.

CJH is recruiting well. Making needed changes and strong hires. The only way this ends badly for him is if the program reverts to Dooley/Pruitt levels of incompetence. There is a nearly zero percent chance of that.

We have studs coming in, strong recruiting in future classes and questions at QB. If Gmac or BF struggle it will not be unexpected (more-so for the latter). Personally, if they were that worried they would have spent the money to land a bigger QB name.

Hoping Gmac shows out and his loyalty and effort are rewarded!

Sure, the poster believed great recruited started them and that was false. No Kelly era, no Shuler era then you do not have Manning/Stewert. Coaches should be promoting NC on the recruiting trail. Tennessee Decade of Dominance started years before Manning if you’re familiar with the video.

Now you should just stop with all the bs common sense, these people don’t want to hear it. But I agree with you 100%.
