I can't stand this game being played on a Monday night. I understand TV contracts rule it as of now and probably the NFL playoffs on Saturday. But when renegotiating how about have the NFL playoff games start at 12 and 4 on Saturday and the CFP start at 8 the same day. No conflict and nobody up untill 1am on a work night.

Thoughts?

I don't think they'd go for that. Pretty jumbled schedule with a lot of football on that Saturday.

A typical Saturday has probably 30+ games on during college season.
Yeah, but the majority of those are junk not watched by a national audience. The college audience is very fragmented and regional. There are usually only a couple of college games on any given Saturday that attract a national audience. NFL playoff games watched by a national audience, as is the CFP title game.

When you have multiple games that are going to be watched by a national audience, you spread it out so they can all be easily watched separately. The NFL isn't airing all 4 of the playoff games on Sunday for that reason.

I understand what you're saying but if the NFL backs up start times on Saturday to 12 and 4 that allows the CFP to air at 8:30pm on a Saturday night.

They aren't going to start a playoff game at 11 Central or 9 am Western. Honestly, I'm surprised they start the Sunday early game at 10 am Western, especially considering there's a West Coast team in it this time.
Edit: CFP could even start at 9 and it being Saturday night.
That's waaay too late, even for a Saturday. The game wouldn't be over until 1 am.

I don't mind the Monday time slot. But it is absurd that the game is being played in the Bay Area. The CFPNCG should never be held west of Dallas.

Even at it's 8pm start it won't be over till after 12. Nobody watching the full game will be asleep by 1am anyways.

Phoenix does a pretty good job with the CFP...but further West than that, nah.

Phoenix did okay for the first Clemson-Bama matchup, though it helped than Clemson fans hadn't had a reason to buy NC tickets in over 30 years. Even then, the ticket prices were way lower than the games in Dallas, Tampa, and Atlanta. And while there's an argument to be made that part of the problem is Bama and Clemson fans being tapped out, I'm willing to bet that if the game were in Atlanta, the average ticket price wouldn't be too far off last year's number.

That would be amazing but that would regulate the NFL to the 2 non-primetime slots that will never happen

4 playoff games this weekend and next. The NFL has been doing this for decades.
Yep. I know this is a Vol forum and some here might not like the NFL or other sports, but it is staggering how much more popular the NFL is than college on a national level. If you're a college fan or live in the South it is harder to see, but nothing moves the needle like the NFL, even with the lower ratings of the last couple years. College football is going to gladly move out of the way of the NFL.

And it cuts the other way too...I've had multiple from the Northeast or out west come to the South and say something like "I knew college football was popular here, but I didn't know it was that popular." They are stunned at the fact that not only is it more popular than the NFL, but it is more popular by a significant margin.

I agree about the Bay Area, especially since the game is not really in San Francisco and basically an hour away. That is not a college football area. However, once the new LA stadium is built and the new Vegas stadium is built I think they would be great selections for a playoff game and national title game.

The National Championship game has been played on a Monday night since 2007 and I'm pretty sure the previous NC games in the BCS were on a weeknight. So I'm going to go with you have a zero chance it will change.

LA is already scheduled for a CFPNCG. It won't be as bad as Santa Clara, but it will be on the cheap end of the ticket price spectrum. As for Vegas, the schools have their heads firmly in the sand when it comes to sports betting, so it's unlikely that Vegas will get a CFPNCG any time soon.

They are such hypocrites. I mean the Orange Bowl is basically named after the Hard Rock Casino down the street in Hollywood. Vegas would be a great destination for the Playoff. It’s pretty much the live entertainment capital of the Country. The infrastructure is there, entertainment, new stadium, but it just happens to be the gambling capital too.

As much as we would all like to, you can't just ignore the Western part of the US. Although CA has many PAC 12 schools, none of them really give an ish unless USC is in the top 2.

And people from the middle of the US tend to winter/vacation in AZ. If a MW team makes the playoff Phoenix is a popular destination.

Not for me. Much rather watch a good college game.

The refs are ruining the college game, IMO. They waste too much time on play reviews. Most of the reviews could be completed by the time the ref puts on the headset. The targeting rule is ridiculous...leading to more unnecessary time-wasting reviews. There's no reason for games to take 4 hours.
