Mike Singer of CBSSports.com wrote this great summary, with a bold prediction that favors Vols over both Iowa and UMass:

Iowa will face Tennessee in a battle of No. 11s in a match-up that almost no one thought would be necessary, at least from the Hawkeyes' perspective, maybe a month ago. On February 15, the Hawkeyes had four conference losses (Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin). Since then, Fran McCaffery's dark-horse team has nose-dived, losing six of seven, including horrible losses to Illinois and Northwestern. The committee's choice to give Iowa a play-in game shows how close they were to being left out of the tournament entirely. The most intriguing part of the matchup has to be momentum. Iowa has endured a steep fall, while the Vols have won five of their last six and nearly took down Florida in the SEC tournament.

Top Players in the First Four:

T.J. Warren, N.C. State: The ACC's Player of the Year in the First Four? Yep, we'll take that. The 6-foot-8 forward led the ACC in scoring at 24.8 points per game and could be a menace to Xavier's big men.

Jordan McRae, Tennessee: Another high-volume shooter, McRae averages 18.6 per game to go along with 3.5 boards per contest. The senior is anything but shy – he pops more than six three-pointers per game.

Semaj Christon, Xavier: Christon, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, is an NBA prospect itching to make a splash on a national stage. He had 18 points in the Big East semifinal loss to Creighton, and will certainly dot a few highlight reels from the play-in games.

Roy Devyn Marble, Iowa: Marble averages 17.3 points per game for the Hawkeyes and is one of its only capable one-on-one scorers. Aside from a 3-for-11 night in the loss to Illinois, his production has actually increased during Iowa's recent lull.

Aaric Murray, Texas Southern: Texas Southern won the SWAC tournament in large part because of Murray, who had 27 points and 10 boards in the championship against Prairie View A&M. He has had some off-the-court issues (largely a reason he's bounced around from La Salle to West Virginia and finally, to Texas Southern), but the 6-foot-10 senior poured in 48 against Temple earlier this year.

Schedule:

No. 16 Albany vs. No. 16 Mount St. Mary's Tuesday, 6:40 p.m. ET. Winner faces No. 1 Florida.

No. 12 N.C. State vs. No. 12 Xavier Tuesday, 9:10 p.m. ET. Winner faces No. 5 Saint Louis.

No. 16 Cal Poly vs. No. 16 Texas Southern Wednesday, 6:40 p.m. ET. Winner faces No. 1 Wichita State.

No. 11 Tennessee vs. No. 11 Iowa Wednesday, 9:10 p.m. ET. Winner faces No. 6 UMass.

Bold Prediction (Love it -- OrangeNehi):
Tennessee beats Iowa, then beats UMass, to set up an intriguing Round of 32 game against Duke. Let's not forget the noise La Salle made last year (Sweet 16) coming out of Dayton as a First Four.

Note "battle of No. 11s". Both Tennessee and Iowa are 11-seeds, they aren't playing to become an 11-seed.

Just pointing that out. Carry on. :hi:

Cuonzo coaching against Coach K...that's like taking a knife to a gun fight, and the guy with the knife is a blind paraplegic.

Yeah, beating Duke, if the Vols get that far, would be a tall order for Martin and the boys.

Maybe Zo's erratic use of timeouts and unimaginative offensive sets will sufficiently dumbfound a legend like Coach K to actually work to our advantage.

One can hope anyway...

I think we'll probably lose. I think the pressure will get to them. Despite our great performances as of late, I still think that mindset of underachieving is still ingrained deep into the team...I see it rearing its ugly head on Wednesday night. Regardless though, just glad to for stokes to actually get to see the tourney before he heads off. Here's hoping I'm wrong

I think pretty much everyone has picked UT to win the play-in game and the first (2nd?) round. I just heard a guy from Prediction Machine and he said that they have UT as a 4 pt. favorite over Iowa and either UT or Iowa would be a significant favorite over UMass. He also said that they have UT ranked at 14th in their power rankings. UMass @ 56.

Gimme an example of how Martin has badly used timeouts? And what offense do you think they should run? I suppose I'm looking for reasons not to like Zo.

They are playing to become the 11 seed in the Midwest Region. You could say that neither team is seeded at the moment and the winner of the game will be an 11 seed.

Or just as easily say both are 11 seeds and the winner moves on as said 11th seed. Doesn't really matter how you say it. It's very simple a little strange, but very simple.

If nothing else, it's confusing. The official UT release does actually say the teams are "vying for the No. 11 seed."

Technically, that could still be true with both teams seeded 11. Regardless, all of this is giving me a headache.

How many times did he call a TO right after we made a big play or seem to be starting a run? And surely you remember the TO with 2.x seconds left at A&M after we'd done our best impression of a monkey ----ing a football for 10 seconds trying to get a shot off.

Offense? Something that scores more points preferably.

I'm looking for reasons to like Zo more if you got any...

The biggest Round of 64 upset will be Tennessee over UMass. The Volunteers turned around the season and cooled Cuonzo Martin's hot seat with a strong finish to the regular season and respectable showing in the SEC tournament. With senior Jordan McRae leading the way, the Vols should be able to get our of Dayton and keep the momentum rolling against a UMass team that lost three of its last five games.

Seems like the computers are picking Iowa and some humans are picking TN.

Just saw on ESPN that Iowa's coach has a son with a tumor who is having surgery this week and he may not be coaching this game. Was on the ticker. TIFWIW

Good points. I don't have any reasons to like Zo other than the fact that he's a cancer survivor and tough as nails.

Tennessee would be favored versus UMass, so no way in hell it's the biggest upset of the round of 64.

I'm getting fired up for the game. Like to see Barton get it going again and I think we will be okay.

Worry about all the other stuff when it's time. But for now the vols our in the tourney and I'm going to make the best of it.

Go Big Orange!!!!!!
