Cases of West and Jurick, my take

In the cases of both West and Jurick, most of the blame falls on the individuals and their high school programs for not being ready to make the jump into college.

I disagree that those two or their high schools are mostly to blame for them not being back next year. The circumstance is the team's APR and that Pearl chose to sign Goins.

I graduated from Juricks high school. They have never had or since had a basketball program worth a damn except when he was there. The coach is a good guy, but more of a friend than a coach.

Jurick definitely should have tried to get into a halfway decent private school for free. East Ridge... lol.

I feel bad for West, because he hung around and tried to make it happen. In a way I feel just as sorry for Jurick, even though I never thought much of his UT future, because he redshirted and was working hard on improving. Sad story, any way you look at it.

It's ridiculous to say West was mostly to blame for his situation. Granted, he should have never let his grades slip, but he manned up and did what he needed to do. I give the most responsibility to the NCAA for royally screwing him with the timing of the flagged test. Also, CBP should have never had him stick around without a scholarship here if he was just going to recruit a juco PG to take his spot. Unless there is more to this story and West still wasn't going to qualify or something, CBP threw him under the bus.

From what I heard on the radio today, when West was ruled ineligible, Pearl never told him that he would have a scholarship available next year. It was West's decision to stick around on campus, complete, a year of school, and then try to rejoin the team. This was all from The Sports Animal, so take it for what it's worth.

Where else was West going to go? He wasn't eligible to play anywhere in the NCAAs this past season, so I don't see what he lost by completing a year of college.

Which is worth about as much as that $3 bill in my pocket. This link contradicts the talking points UTAD/Pearl/Sports Animal are pushing...

He lost about $20,000 in out of state tuition on the basis that he was lead to believe he was going to have a scholarship available to him next year...

It sad when you know most of the local media other than Basilio will buy the lime and dig the holes if UT asks them to.

Shameful.

the snooze machine is carrying the party line...

The people in Daniel's home town ponied up some of the money that allowed him to be in school this year. Pearl told West's high school coach a MONTH ago that West was going to make it. This is shameful for UT. UT assumed that West would buckle under and leave. Instead, he stayed around and fought his way back on the team... or so he thought......

And there's no way Goins is a better option than West. Why can't we just screw him over instead of a kid who stayed on school without a scholarship and worked his tail off? Not to mention Goins is a JC with less eligibility I'm guessing.

West and his situation--but it sounds like Pearl is treating him HARSHLY--IF he is now qualified to play. Is he? We did offer him a schollie originally, yes? He didn't qualify, so he came here and paid his own way for a year. Now, what, Pearl just told him tough luck, I'm bringing in a couple of other guards??? That sux, if you ask me.

I find Pearl doing this to Daniel West to be 100% in line with his character.

He is academically eligible, and Pearl told his high school coach a month ago that he was going to make it. His home community of Saginaw passed the hat to raise money so that he could stay at UT. Why would he stay an extra year and pay his own way if he didn't want to be a Vol. This situation is pathetic.

Now Pearl hasn't been returning phone calls from West's mother or his old coach? Why?

If any of that is true then I lost a lot of respect for Pearl and I didn't have the most respect for him to begin with compared to some of the worshippers on here.

I appreciate what Pearl has done for the program, but I don't want to win at all costs like this. This is beyond pulling a scholarship from an actual scholarship player, this seems really dirty to me. Even if West showed not to be a fit, he and everyone certainly had the expectation that he would be on scholarship next year if eligible.

IMO if you no longer want a scholarship player on your team, you try to get him to leave. If he will not, a coach shouldn't just cut his scholarship. That's the coaches mistake.

I just don't see what CBP thinks he will accomplish with this move.
