Have the Democrats wasted the first night of the convention?
Yes, says Democratic Strategist and CNN contributor James Carville.
Speaking on CNN, Carville said the party was too soft in its attacks on John McCain Monday night — the same mistake, Carville says, Democrats made at the 2004 convention.
"The way they planned it tonight was supposed to be sort of the personal — Michelle Obama will talk about Barack Obama personally, Ted Kennedy was a very personal, emotional speech," Carville said. "But I guarantee on the first night of the Republican Convention, you're going to hear talk about Barack Obama, commander-in-chief, tax cuts, et cetera, et cetera."
"You haven't heard about Iraq or John McCain or George W. Bush — I haven't heard any of this. We are a country that is in a borderline recession, we are an 80 percent wrong-track country. Health care, energy — I haven't heard anything about gas prices," Carville also says. "Maybe we are going to look better Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. But right now, we're playing hide the message."
Carville also said the party needs to do a better job of communicating its message to the American people.
“If this party has a message it's done a hell of a job hiding it tonight, I promise you that," he said.

I think it mainly has to do with that the democrats think Obama has already won the election. I can't believe it, but they are going to blow it yet again!

Thoughts?

I think that was the jist of it from most neutral observers. You gotta believe its going to get amped up though with the Clintons coming up. But, I wonder if they are going to spend all their time preaching unity, and how much time they spend getting their message out.

Either way, he got Bubba to power and kept him there.

He knows exactly what he is talking about.

It bugs me to no end that people think Obama has no flaw.

:eek:k:

Who said Obama doesn't have any flaws? This was about strategy on how the convention is played out.

Convention or coronation???????

This whole debacle is a waste of time....... if democrats want to win they are going to have to start telling people who they are instead of telling people why republicans are nefarious people.

I agree and I think they will get to that this week. They have to spend some time telling people who Obama is since some people apparently think he is Muslim still. Why not address that on the first night then get down to business? That's why I disagree with Carville, I like him too but disagree on this matter. And if it had been Hillary she could do no wrong to him, that's why I brought her up. Speaking of Carville, what's his wife up to these days, never hear about her anymore. Does she still play a big role in the GOP?

She does, I would love to see how their home life is.

Carville cracks me up...... I love to listen to him talk.

I think it is silly that people think Obama is a muslim...

To me I would have focused on Obama being a "real" person and simply not a politician.

Why not focus that he and his wife finished paying off their college loans just a mere 4 years ago?

Despite TennNC love for Biden..... I mean honestly....

He has run for President like McCain has..... Biden brings nothing to the ticket.

As opposed to running nothing but attack ads and talking nothing of their merits?

Look around I'm not impressed with McCains campaign, he needs to get off his high horse and talk about issues or he's going to lose.

I actually watched Carville during the 04 election and he was right on the money. In fact, he pretty much said the same thing IIRC

I heard that all of the CNN commentators were dissing the first night of the convention....talking over a lot of the speeches because they said they were too boring to put on TV.

Well, you know its bad when Olbermann has only this to say...............Analysis of Michelle's Speech [Greg Pollowitz]

Flipping between MSNBC and Fox provides quite a contrast. Keith Olbermann really has no interest in being an anchor of this event and is a full on advocate. He called Michelle's speech "pitch perfect" and declared "case closed."

Fox's Chris Wallace had a different take declaring it, "a largely wasted night

well, then you're bugging yourself unnecessarily, b/c nobody is saying that. And, btw, it's not like Obama is controlling every aspect of the DNC.
