Can we stop the run???

yeah. i think betwen Thomposn and Taylor you're probably all set, athletically. they'll both probabl shine at times. and they'll both probably make mistakes that you know experience could account for later on. i'm cautiosly optimistic about Buchannon. we'll see.

i'm with you on Safety and Nickel. we really should be good there. and i'm liking our LB corp at the top of the depth chart.

DL is still thin. but those 1st three should be good to go. i think we're just gonna have to live with the notion that defensively, we'll probably see flashes, but lack the consistency and overall depth you'd need to be really good.

that said, we've been sooooo bad on defense, an average defense is a fairly significant upgrade, especially if we just get to average against the run....lol.
Honestly... I can live with mistakes if they'll just show some aggression. Over the last couple of years it seemed that everyone named Barnett waited to react to what the offensive player did to them. Not only did it seem they weren't able to reestablish the LOS with the DL... they never seemed to try. Their habit of "catching" the blocker too often had their shoulders turned with gaping running lanes in between them. Some of what was wrong just isn't rocket science.

Sorry. Every time I think of how bad UT was at fundamentals I start to get aggravated with Jones again.

I won't argue but the 2001 guys... but I really like what UT has at S and like Buchanan and Taylor as a starting pair too. Wish we could have confidence in CB depth.

I may be setting myself up for disappointment but honestly I see the component pieces on this roster for a pretty decent team. They weren't developed well and Lord knows for all his talk about "complimentary football" Jones was never any more familiar with how to put a cohesive team together than I am with brain surgery by reading a book on gardening. But there are lots of guys who look really good "on the hoof"... and they finally have a coach that if nothing else has gotten them to the season healthy.
haha...yeah, agree on complimentary football component, which is why i do expect our offense to be geared to a more defensive type game plan. i think the goal has to be to string 1st downs together, and play a little keep away, and take advantage of match up oportunities in the passing game when they become available. nothing too fancy.

i agree, there's components on this team that COULD translate to it being better than we think.

it's still a lot to ask for all of it, or most of it, to come together to the point that it means we're able to execute to the level the coaches ultimately want them to.

i expect moments where you "see it" and moments where you see rookies. just hope the latter doesn't affect the outcome of the game.

oh, i agree. i told my brother during a game last year "man, when we get blocked, we stay blocked"....really frustrating way to watch defensive football.

Agree. What info do we have to suggest that WV can get anything going on the ground? 50 was the number that came to mind, but it might be closer to 27 or so.
It isn't quite as much the total yards as getting stops though the two usually go together. VT held them to 24 points but gave up over 200 yds rushing and 371 yds passing. UT doesn't want to try that formula... but VT won. TCU was similar but a little better. They gave up 24 points on 142 yds rushing and 366 yds passing.

OSU is the model. Only 62 yds rushing to go with 285 passing, 4 INT's, and under 50% completions... and they were willing to risk a few big plays to get the stops needed to do this. They conceded that WVU would score some points.

yep. i think that's probably us this weekend as well. live with what you're willing to live with....whatever it is you can't live with...stop that first.

I want us to grind teams with 10 minute drives, is that too much to ask?

Grier is being talked about being in the Heisman run...I'd stay stopping the pass is the first priority...stopping run second...stopping both third...:D

GO VOLS!

Most coaches focus on the run first because if you can stuff the run with your front 7 you don't have to commit your safeties to help and they can play deeper taking away the seams and deep ball. Plus if your DL is stuffing run blocks and keeping the LB's clean then the LB's don't have to be as concrned about play action and can get in their drops quicker. You'll hear coaches talking about making a team one dimentional that's what they mean - taking away the run game as an effective way to move the ball. If UWV is passing on 3rd and 2 you'll know Pruitt and Company have succeeded. Then you can tee off on the QB in on all passing down and distance scenarios and hopefully get some sacks and INTs.

Once again another post that makes you look dumb. Most wvu fans wanted McKoy to start over Crawford, McKoy is a all around better RB. We have 4 RBs that your going to see. McKoy would start at most P5 schools. I think pettaway is trash, but rs freshman Sinkfield and true fresh Leddie Brown are future stars. McKoy Sinkfield and Brown have more talent then any of you're 3 Rbs.

Your inability to know the proper difference between "your" and "you're" in the English language makes you look dumb and uneducated. You're=you are. Your=it belongs to you. Lets not throw stones over opinions. Everybody has one.

"You're" welcome. ;)

WVU rivals bored getting a little dull buddy?? You just had to come over here to the big boys chat board so you could see what a real fan base looks like huh. I understand, just don’t let it happen again! ✌️
