Can Tennessee, Eric Berry Finally Give Stiff Arm to Ghost of Charles Woodson? -- NCAA Football FanHouse

Good stuff.

It's amazing how average Charles Woodson's numbers were that year. You don't need big numbers to be a lock down corner, but the "best player in America" should have something more than pedestrian stats. Eight interceptions is impressive, but it's not like the Big 10 was loaded that year. Ohio St. was the only other team with double digit wins while the SEC had 3 teams with double digit wins, not including the Vols. Tennessee went 2-1 against those teams and beat a Top 5 UCLA team as well. Hell, the Vols beat more Top 25 teams than Michigan even played.

Michigan's schedule was chalked full of average teams with below average QB's. Then there was Ron Powlus of course.......but in all seriousness, when Joe Germaine is the toughest QB you face all season long and 3 of your 8 interceptions come against Matt Sherman...that should be pretty telling.

Meanwhile, in Tennessee's one loss Manning only managed 353 yds 3td 2int against a defense that was all over him the whole game. Meh...I can see it I guess.

Further proof Chris Fowler was exactly right. In the annals of moronic cries of those unable to accept reality, "Manning Wuz Robbed" has joined "Thu South Will Rize Ugin" at the top of the list.

. . . except Manning probably was robbed.

Yes. The South was more righted than robbed.

We don't rehash it much, but my dad says Majors was absolutely robbed. Guess that only lasted 40 years.

Yeah, nothing says greatness like throwing for a bunch of yards after you've thrown a touchdown to Tony George to eliminate your team from a shot at winning. Manning was a professional choke artist. Given the national stage, he throws a touchdown to the other side to complete a career long cycle of coughing it up against UT's best competition. Given the national stage, Woodson came up huge against Ohio State and led his team to a National Title. End of story.

If EB's Heisman campaign means a whole year of drudging up this painful memory I'll pass. The Heisman sucks!!!

That is all.

I find it amusing that apparently people speak like 13 year old girls type.

EB deserved a shot at it last year, let's hope he earns it this year, just like he did last year!

The average 13 year old girl has an IQ 2.4 times greater than the typical Manning Heismancaust crier.

I don't know that I'd equate it with genocide, but far worse QBs have won the Heisman over better defenders than Woodson.

Not really . . . but this is a 12 year old argument with no end in sight, so I'll pass.
History is written by the victors. Manning lost every game he played at Tennessee that had significance in a National Title race. He was annointed the Heisman winner, then hit Tony George in the numbers. He got exactly what he deserved.

Sounds like you're the crier here.

Not me. I'm just ridiculing the portion of our fanbase that can't live with the fact the Manning Era produced exactly 1 SEC title and four asskickings from Florida. Had he performed on the big stage, he gets the trophy. Instead, he spent his time in Knoxville getting outplayed by the Danny Wuerffels and Doug Johnsons of the world when it mattered most.

Great article, I was just about to post it but I guess someone beat me to it. The writer of that column also wrote the books Dixieland Delight and On Rocky Top.

I would say Berry is a way better player in college than Woodson was. However, what may have put Woodson over the top was the little bit of WR he played.

I would trade a Heisman for a Super Bowl ring any day. I doubt Peyton is shedding as many tears as others are about him being runner up to a "mythical" trophy.

Agree with Hat.
Woodson was phenomenal at Michigan. "Pediestrian statistics" is such a crock. CB's aren't judged by their stats, they can't puff up the INT's and tackles the way safeties, who are free to roam, can.

As little as Woodson was thrown to that year, 8 INTs was spectacular and the INT against Michigan State was one of the best you'll ever see. The big special teams plays when they mattered most sealed it.
