Can our young freshmen rise to the challenge?

I watched Brent Vinson and Eric Berry do a little 1 on 1 work out with Larry Slade and i have never seen speed like that before. Brent looked like he had very good coaching at Hargrave he got off the line very quickly and got great seperation as well as running crisp routes. Berry obviously has unbelievable talent but at first Brent was going right by him but after a few pointers from coach slade he showed a drastic improvement from an athletic standpoint he looks like he can cover anybody he also looks like he is a very quick learner physically they both look like they can compete at a high level of play in the SEC. At the end of the work out Coach Slade looked very pleased. I believe both will do extremely well this year. They both seem to have a good head on their shoulders and look to be very hard workers.

I thought that coaches couldn't work with players outside of the weight room until start of camp. Perhaps I am mistaken...

Obviously Tennessee will need freshmen to step up this year, any particular ones that you see making heavy (much needed) contributions?

That isn't "obvious".

I hope they do but the more I look at it, UT doesn't "need" any of these Freshmen to step in and contribute right away.

The exception is they need one guy to provide a deep threat at WR. That probably isn't going to be one of the Freshmen but rather O'Neal.

Don't get me wrong. I'm stoked over this class and think some of these guys can contribute right away. Berry, Jones, and Vinson seem the most likely candidates.

The greatest need is obvious. Langley or Brimfield could turn this into a championship team overnight if one of them provides that #4 DT. I really like the fact that Langley has been around since January. If he had a good summer in S&C then he could make the most important contribution of any of the freshmen.

Did I say you specifically? No. But I just find it amusing when I see people say a 13-1 or a 12-2 type season with all of our current question marks. Because even if we do make it to Atlanta, we would get demolished against LSU. It would be the third consecutive title game that Phil has failed to bring the trophy home.

This is incredible coming from someone who upbraided someone else for speculation.

First, everyone has question marks. My optimism with UT comes from where they are, how they are likely to be offset, and how they are likely to be overcome.

Second, every team in the East has to replace players. UF has the worst situation of all and they play Aub and LSU from the West. USC is hurting on the OL. UGA replaces 4 OL's and 3 DL's from last year.

Everyone including LSU has unknowns... Can they replace Russell? We all suspect they can but we don't know.

The Vols major remaining question marks are WR and DT depth. If only one of the newcomers steps up at WR and either Langley, Brimfield, Fisher, Nelson, or Thomas provide quality reps at DT... then UT is the most solid team in the East. No one else's problems are that simple in the East. But if any other group is a problem then you'd have to deem them a disappointment... because they should be good.

You are probably right but this was the first week that the Freshmen were on campus so maybe they could coach them at that time but what i saw was more of the players working out on their own with the coaches supervision ocasionaly stepping in and giving a few pointers

I just think we are going to have to have some freshmen help at wide receiver unless everyone has improved immensely.
