Can a school known for one sport later be known for another?

Obviously the University of Tennessee is known to be a football school and up until Coach Pearl, a women's basketball school. If the men's basketball program is more successful than the football program for several years would it then be known as a basketball school or would the love of football in the state of TN prohibit that?

Hmm...interesting question. What if Pearl won 5 or 6 national championships in the next 10-15 years and the football program won 2 or less in that span and had the now typical seasons for most of that time period. Football would still be king, but hoops would be nipping his heels. And I think that's what it would take to make it that way.

IF this happened we would all be thrilled, some of us would have passed on from sheer joy, we would forget about the hated gators, ...what the heck? did I just wake up from a dream?
Of course it has to be a dream, but IF it came true Knoxville would be the Mecca (no offense to my Muslim brothers) of college sports.:clapping:

Billy Gillispie vs. Dennis Franchonie.

now,

Mark Turgeon vs. Mike Sherman.

Basketball is big here in College Station, but I dont know if it will ever overtake football.

UT is a football school, I dont see anything taking over its spot. If the men's and women's bball teams were the natl champs for the next five years, ten even, UT would still be a football school.

I can't see us ever taking any steps towards becoming a basketball school until we finally get our own basketball forum.

Basketball will never overtake Football in America in general.

Theres just something about 11 tired guys on each side giving their all to win a game.

In 10-15 years if Bruce Pearl won 5-6 National Championships and UT football won none is impossible.
The fact that Fulmer would still be the head coach would be the impossible,by the time Pearl wins his first title,Fulmer wont be on the hot seat,he'll be in the pressure cooker of hell.

If UT basketball wins a title before we win another Championship in Football,that'd be too much to bear for my father and espescially my grandfather.That would really be the turning point in most UT fans minds of really "What the f*** is Fulmer doing wrong with the football team"?

Great question. I pull for the day when both UK wins the SEC and NCs both in basketball and football. Doesn´t have to be an either-or situation. Ask the Gators about that.

Is it just me or does anyone else have a gut feeling Billy Gillespie wont last longer than this season at Kentucky if they dont even qualify for the NIT

LSU was the most dominant name in college baseball in the 90's but lately has become a football school.
