I know there are some starters leaving, but understand those players were getting paid BIG bucks or not playing at all. Yeah, some of these we would have liked to stay, but we can literally just take the money we paid them and get other players in the portal. The only thing we should be panicing about is if we don't see us going hard in the portal, if we get past the window with less than 10 transfers, then you can panic, honestly at this point I think we need like 15 dudes, but I'm also not able to watch in practice what the younger guys are doing.

Yes, I assume we are letting these guys go becasue we know we can spend money on others and get more production. I mean Maybe I'm wrong, we will see... but I just have a feeling we are going to go hard in the portal for proven players.

15 means the equivalent to more than an entire offense or entire defense and almost half of one of the special teams. That’s a lot!

You hit the nail on the head. Staley is probably the only guy i would lose sleep over. What we do the next couple weeks in the portal will tell us how serious we are. Some of these coaching moves are at least a good start.

It’s amazing that people freak out over a mass portal exit. We’ve hired one the best dc’s in the country and are upgrading other areas of the staff but we’re going to keep the same players after last year‘s performance.

Forget that. I want to be a part of this “epic meltdown “……
The sky is falling!!!! Reality is, we just saw Heupel’s lowest point in his career. If 8-4 ends up being his lowest point, I can handle that as long as there is a decent gap between that and his ceiling. I’m still excited about our future.

I have stated previously that we (likely many others also) need to hire a person to evaluate these guys better. Not just from a playing ability but from a personal and maturity level. I just wonder if this NIL crap could be paid out like a contract should be structured with wording that not only "pays" but requires the player to meet certain requirements or has to forfeit.

I understand the portal situation and players leaving not just at TN but every school. I heard many of the players at IU came over with the coach from the school he left and been with him 3 years. I kinda wished we could find players who were chasing a NC and willing to hang around long enough to gel as a team on both sides of the ball. Getting a player from the portal still seems like a gamble....you don't know what you got till game time

Could be because those players were not highly recruited players who had a lot of options - just saying. Players that jump from G5 (or lower) to a P4 school do seem to stay at the P4 school once they land there. It is the highly recruited that start at a P4 school that seem more likely to transfer when things are not going their way. At least that is what it seems to me - I have no stats to back it up - but you have the following:

- Players who are trying to move up into a better P4 school that have shown promise at what is considered a lesser school.
- Players who are moving for money, typically highly recruited at a place where the money is not panning out and/or they just don't fit.
- Players who have been recruited (or transferred) over who just want to find a place to play.

Most schools are having this problem. I heard that IU had 50 portal players. 50!!! that is half the team.

These kids parents (with NFL potential) are hiring agents to handle their kids future. They are going to follow directions. If I were an agent I would be telling my player to hit the portal because the bidding for players is going to be fierce, 5 new bags of money desperate to turn around their programs. This will be on top of the teams who lose 25% of their experienced players to the portal. They can always come back to their current team but there is only one way to find their true value. The team who spends the most money will be able to purchase a national championship.

2025 was a meh year for me. Baseball so so, basketball so so, and football was so so. Nothing to get excited about. If we are not competing for the top 10 in the SEC and 20 in the USA...meh. A lot of work to do. I am not a football coach or expert so leave that to Danny White and others. Change for UT should be good. We were getting worse and not better. Losing to Vandy, Bama, Oklahoma, and UGA, means a so-so year. Get back in the practice and conditioning facility and become a challenger instead of being challenged. No doubt we need dramatic improvement in a) spiritual, b) mental, c) physical, and just plain old toughness. Bama and UGA losing this week proves anyone can get better. Been way too long since we challenged for the top 10.
