At Daytona, there is usually a degree of luck involved. You have to get in the right line at the right time, get a drafting partner that works with you, and be in position to have a shot. Newman had these things happen, because he was good enough to be able to make them happen. Without his teamate he never could have won.

Due to being cancelled, there are no bonus points for Qualifying. The field is being set by last years owner points and provisionals. Ken Schrader, Mike Skinner, AJ Almendinger, Patrick Carpentier and Burney Lamar failed to make the race. Kurt Busch, Dale Jarett, and Bill Elliot are in as past champions.
