Using the Expected Points Added metric, which measures the difference in how many points a team is expected to score based on down, distance and spot before and after a play happens, we can quantify just how much Barnett is worth to the Volunteers beyond the 29 tackles hes made in 2016.
In his first two games, Barnett held teams to -1.05 EPA, a respectable but not overwhelming amount. But he put up an outstanding -12.91 EPA over his next four contests meaning he was worth more than three points per game on defense over the last month. Considering the fact that Tennessee has played in two overtime games this season and had three others decided by single digits, that makes Barnett an extremely valuable defensive commodity.
In all, Barnett has racked up -14.44 EPA this year, essentially taking away a little more than two touchdowns away from opposing offenses in the first half of the regular season. He averages -0.48 EPA on plays hes involved in and -2.41 EPA per game, including -3.23 EPA over the last four games.
