Since we have a number of VN members making the trek west, I thought it might be helpful to share itineraries, to get ideas about what to do in the Bay Area. Here's mine, for now.
Wednesday the 29th-Arrive shortly after noon. Go to the Sir Francis Drake to meet the ladyfriend. Possibly hustle over to watch the last few innings of the Giants and Rockies. Otherwise, take a walk around downtown. Dinner at the Tadich Grill.
Thursday the 30th-My mandatory trip to Alcatraz. Breakfast along the Emabarcadero. Let the ladyfriend pick the afternoon activities. Dinner at Sam's Grill. Drinks and dancing at Harry Denton's Starlight Room.
Friday the 31st-Breakfast at the Pinecrest Diner. Spend the day in Chinatown. Lunch at Cafe Tiramisu. Head to Jack London Square for drinks. Attend A's-Tigers. Go to Lefty O'Doul's for drinks and piano sing alongs.
Saturday the 1st-Not sure yet. It appears we could go to the A's-Tigers game and still make it to Berkeley for the game. A more likely course of action is brunch at Pat O'Shea's, BART over to Berkeley and soak up atmosphere, watch the inevitable UT blowout victory, return to downtown San Francisco and pick a bar to pillage.
Sunday the 2nd-Breakfast along the water, see the ladyfriend off to the airport, catch the A's-Tigers, have a few more beers at Lefty Odoul's, catch the 11 pm flight back to South Florida.

I love the Bay Area. Try to make it out at least once a year. I think UT fans will find this to be one of the better road trips the Vols have ever taken.

me too. i've had the pleasure of making a trip out there several times on business, stayed over a couple of weekends and have always enjoyed the food, baseball, and what little nightlife i've been able to partake in.

for those that have the time and cabbage, you are correct......this will be a great road trip.

though, i haven't been to alcatraz.......the only regret i have. you have to book those tours pretty well in advance if memory serves, but there's also enough to do on the Warf that it'll keep you busy enough if you don't make it to the Rock.

good times.......

I don't have my itinerary to the level you do. I will be arriving Thursday and will be staying in Sausalito. We will be heading into wine country for the day Friday and will be hanging in Berkeley all day Saturday.

Wine country is some of the more beautiful real estate in America. I would encourage anyone making the trip to the Bay Area for the first time to carve out at least an afternoon to see it.

Alcatraz is definitely worth the trip. The "park" is free, but you have to take a ferry to get there. You can make reservations at Alcatraz Island - Official Tickets Site - Guaranteed Lowest Price. Your best bet is to do it early in the morning to get it out of the way. The audiotour is one of the best audiotours I've ever done -- good times all around.

I'll be out there, btw. It will be my second trip to the Bay Area. LOVED it the first time -- a few years ago. Actually staying 3 nights in Vegas before jetting over to SF on the 30th. Coming back to Knoxville (via Vegas on Allegiant) late Sunday night.

We never miss it - especially if the weather is gloomy, the train ride up is a great way to spend the day.

We'll miss going into SF and the theater district this trip. They have great hotel bars lining the streets - good booze and conversations. I love catching a play at the Geary Theater. Anyone that likes theater, I recommend that area.

The last time I was in Lefty's a guy had a heart attack at the bar.

Tip: Instead of going to Oakland-Jack London Sq', go here --it's SAFER and the view is excellent.

Top Of The Mark

"The Top Of The Mark has become a “must-see” destination for visitors from all over the world who come for the breathtaking views of San Francisco City and Bay, the famed 100 Martinis menu, and perhaps even for a rendezvous with nostalgia."

Since you're going to be at The Drake, take a few more steps and go here for some beer and Brie cheese.

Here

Your lady friend would enjoy this--over on Columbus Av which not too far from Lefty's and the above hotels.

I never miss Jack London Square. I like the grittiness of the place. It's pure Oakland.

I always go here for breakfast--it's an SF landmark.

Buena Vista

You folks might need a good greasy breakfast before heading out to the prison.

barclay's in jack london square has an excellent beer list and good pub food. edit: just looked it up and they closed it a couple of years ago. my apologies. the one on college off the rockridge bart is still fantastic though.

Perhaps we should name a central bar location in Berkley for a cocktail before kickoff.

Outstanding. That sounds like a great way to spend Friday night.

Here's mine so far, and I welcome comments from Droski if he thinks any of this is just flat-out not going to work:

Sat the 25th: fly into SFO, drive to Modesto. Dinner/beers at a brewpub.
Sun the 26th: drive our way through the crowds in Yosemite; dayhike somewhere. Spend the night in Mammoth Lakes, with dinner/beers at another brewpub.
Mon 27th: drive to Mt. Whitney area; visit the Ancient Bristlecone Forest, home of the 4000 year old trees. Camp at 10,000 feet altitude to get ready for...
Tues 28th & Wed 29th: summit Mt. Whitney, altitude 14,494 feet, highest point in the lower 48 states.
Thurs 30th: drive back to SF. (Yes, this is gonna something like 8 hours.) Take a long shower and drink heavily when we arrive back in civilization. We are staying at the Sir Francis Drake all weekend.
Fri 31st: Wine country expedition. Dinner and beers back in SFO after we get back; we might end up trying to drown Hat out at the piano bar once we get back.
Sat 1st: BEER AND FOOTBALL
Sun 2nd: Unknown yet; just a free day to do whatever in SF.
Mon 3rd: fly home.

Lefty O'Doul's is thankfully a very short walk/stagger from the Sir Francis Drake.

The Terp With Whom I'll Be Traveling and I have a weakness for piano sing-a-longs, given the right circumstances, and I suspect that our grueling backcountry itinerary earlier in the week plus a wine country visit that Friday will have us in the mood for that sort of thing. I'll be the annoying guy singing with the even more annoying guy, probably in a Ravens shirt, with my wife trying to shut us both up. Maybe I'll wear a Ramones shirt or something all weekend just VolNationers in the area can tell who I am.

I'm not sure that the Bay Area has ever seen anything like Vol Nation descending on their area. I can't think of any southern football power that has played at Stanford or Cal. The cultural interaction should be a sight to behold.
