A serious question for students of the game...What is going to be the tie-breaker between these two closely matched teams?

a) Tenn's inexperienced WR's vs CAL's veteran trio

b) Ainge's experience vs Longshore's big game jitters

c) Cal's poor pash rush

d) Tenn offensive line

e) Cal's inexperienced cornerback (not Thompson)

f) DeSean Jackson/special teams

d) Tedford vs Fulmer

e) Tenn's inexperienced corners

e) Forsett vs Hardesty

f) other____________________

Interested in your thoughts.....

UT's offensive and defensive lines will tell the story. Given the fact that the Vols seem in no hurry to get some of their young receivers on the field, I expect a hefty dose of "three yards and a cloud of dust" from the UT offense.

If the defensive line can get some pressure on Longshore, and UT doesn't have to bring backers all night, it will allow some zone help for the secondary.

I think Cal's offensive line is actually going to be pretty good this year. I worry more about our defensive front against UT's offensive line.

Our big three have incredible skill. One is an LSU commit that saw the light and headed home to Cali.

That is what the UT coaching staff has in mind as well. You will know what kind of D Line and linebackers you have after this game.

Well look at it this way, last year our D-line was rated as #1 in the country, that was a big joke. This year maybe everyone will discount them and they will be good? :dunno:

Our linebackers should be solid. But the bigger question is our D-line. If Ainge isn't sacked more than three times, I don't see Cal winning this game.

I think you need to have special teams in there that's the biggest thing going for you against UT. Tennessee will win because we are faster, stronger, and we will run for 180 yards.

I expect the all around speed of the UT team to be a little better than it was this time last year as well.

If they do not rattle Ainge early and he settles in the pocket, it will be a long day for the Bears. The same could be said for Longshore as well.

it will be interesting up front when y'all have the ball. you do have a couple of all pac 10 linemen, and y'all are deep. our defensive line is down a little bit but our LB are top notch. i still can;t help but feel that we have a big upper hand on you.

I'm not so sure UT's team speed is going to be faster this year. Anyone recall what the recruiting class rankings were the last three years for each team (not including 2007)? I think Cal may have the edge if I remember right.

They don't take any of that into account, so don't bother...

I think UT had the #1 class in 2005, no? Or damn near close?

I expect the addition of Rico McCoy to the linebacking corps, the loss of weight by Mapu, and the youthful injection in the secondary to make the Vols a tad quicker this year.

Though there is no way to support it, I also think that the defensive ends may show a quicker first step.

Not sure what recruiting rankings have to do with team speed.

Imagine the confidence solid "O" Line play will instill in Ainge, if we perform well up front on the road at Cal.
It will set us up nice to play in the Swamp.

Chavis's D is not going to be anything like last year's D in my thoughts. More Exp more Talent on the field. Nothing has been proven yet but our D is really going to shock some people this year. Assuming we stay healthy, the unforgiving wild card of all sports. I guess that was a response to your corner question- although Berry is they only guy I think that has little exp. I think the other guys got some time last year And I will take an inexperienced Berry over any corner we have had in awhile.

It is hard to blame us. The Bears looked like they were standing still during most of the contest last year. UT had a highly ranked class in 05, but its speediest member is no longer playing.

Recruiting class rankings are usually based on size and speed, which is why they routinely miss diamonds in the rough like Justin Forsett and Daymeion Hughes and (fill in the bland UT examples....)
