I know a few of us have mentioned in a couple different posts about getting together in Berkeley, but I never heard anything official or definitive. So, does anyone want to try to meet up for a couple beers before we go whoop them Bears?

Droski/Teddy, any suggestions?

Actual tailgating berkeley is limited and frankly more of a pain than it is worth. if you have your heart set on it I can suggest a couple of places where you might be able to fire up a grill. if you mean good bars/food to do pregame (in berkeley):

Raliegh's - great atmosphere with large patio, pretty good food, pitchers of beer, student hangout
Bear's lair - on campus bar. good beer. lots of tvs. will be overflowing with people though.
Jupiter Brewery - good beer, good food, nice patio, bit of a hike (25 minutes) to the stadium
Blakes - Bar with tvs, decent food, student hangout
Henry's - closest bar to stadium, lots of tvs, good food, huge alumni hangout

:ermm: so nowhere just to grab a fifth of Jack and/or a 12-pack and just hangout...??

no worries, it'll be a great time regardless. I was more or less looking for the most populated tailgate spot in hopes of meeting up with some fellow Volunteers and tossing a few back.
If you only had one game to go to at Berkeley, how would you spend your day? Raleigh's, Henry's?

well there are many places on campus right next to the stadium with large lawns, but you can't fire up the grill and alcohol is "not allowed" (though i've never had a cop give me a second glance with a beer in my hand).

If you get there early, i'd suggest the raleigh's patio for the best experience. it will be packed though. depends if you want to watch the early games. they have tv's outside, but it's not the focus.

That, sir, sums up the difference between SEC and PAC 10 football.

there's good tailgating at virtually every other pac-10 stadium, we're in an urban area with almost no parking lots. that is why our tailgating stinks. even stanford has good tailgating spots.

Oh.

Well then never mind.

Droski,

Friday night in San Fran - where should 2 24 year old guys go?

err, well that's rather vague. my favorite area is the mission. if you take bart towards the airport/daily city (from downtown) and get off at 16th and mission (10 minute ride) and walk away from mission ave, towards valencia (two blocks) you'll run into 20+ bars/restuarants. I can give you specific ideas if you tell me what type of food/bar scene you are looking for. most of the bars are between dive bars and "urban hip."

Citysearch is pretty good for SF: San Francisco City Guide - Recommendations and Reviews by Citysearch

you can select the mission neighborhood.

Aahhhh, well if you are straight go to Broadway St. There you will find really good bars, and exotic dancing clubs galore.:boobies: It has a total NY atmosphere. Penthouse Club is by far the best but costs ten to fifteen bucks to get in. Plus the drinks they serve are a joke.:realmad: I ordered a Rum and Coke once and it was practically all coke! I took to ordering a shot and a coke and mixed it myself!

If you are other, go anywhere in the Castro district. There you will find everything your looking for, from what I hear…:dunno:

I wouldn’t try tailgating, not really going to work. I would just get some JD or Rum and mix it in a big soda cup with some coke. Works every time. Then maybe go to a bar (see Droski's list) to meet up with some Vols. For the penny pinchers (like myself) I have learned from experience you can save a lot of money by doing a lot of :beerf: before you go to the bar.

Sneaking in bottles in backpacks at the stadium has never been a problem for me, but for good measure put a few books and notepads in there and maybe a shirt. When the person at the gate asks you to open your bag, do so like cool hand Luke. Gently shuffle through the books and what not, but obviously do not show the bottle!:nono: When you get in the stadium, buy a big sports drink of soda.

From there, sadly, you can go into one of our pathetic port-o-potties (they line the outside of parts of the stadium yet they are inside the gates) and mix your drink without fear of anyone seeing. If you are really smooth, (like me) you can do it in the backpack. Though as you are rookies @ Memorial, I highly advise against this.

Oh yeah, do me a favor... If having to piss in a port-o-potty pisses you off as much as it does me,(not because I am a snob, but because we should have better facilities) scream at the hippies in the big Oak trees. Yes, you will be able to see them. They are hideous beasts!

Oh yeah, for the ladies… There are some conventional restrooms as well, though they can be packed and honestly I have never used them so I am not sure what their condition is. Not really sure why I am telling you about the dark side of Memorial, but I guess I care about you guys.:dunno: More than anything, I want you to have a nice and memorable trip to my beautiful state of California.

May the best team win!

So there really are hippies in trees...?? awesome!

but porta-poddies? are you serious?

I've never had trouble bringing in any libations before, trust me, I'm a veteran at such a thing. And I've always just mixed it at my seat, using discretion of course.

hippies in trees. porta-poddies. dang.

yeah our facilities stink no question. you'll have a nice view of the game, but don't expect neyland like facilities. i imagine having espn there will bring out the treetards.

Sneaking in booze under some books in a backpack? Are you serious? Why in the heck would anyone be bringing books to a football game in the first place?

We're bringing professional drinkers to this game - we won't be mixing a drink in a porta-john. Get real.

Do tell what your master plan is, I am dying to know. Also as the stadium is on campus, why wouldn’t I have books?:ermm:

I've brought in a flask to cal games for 7 or 8 straight years for many many straight games. All i do is take off my sweatshirt, put the flask in the sweatshirt, and hold the sweatshirt over my head when they do the patdown. I haven't once not gotten the flask in the stadium.
