I know I have BVS but I keep seeing these articles/rankings this morning and I have doubts.

The Vols are # 3 in the SEC power ranking?
SEC Power Rankings: Ranking every SEC team after Week 2

Our Vols are #7 in the ESPN FPI?
College football rankings: ESPN updates FPI Top 25 after Week 2

Is BVS keeping me from seeing what the "Experts" are seeing?
Prob somewhere in between, but we just beat a very good Pitt team in the road even though we didn’t play a clean game and made some costly mistakes. Put a full game together and I believe we can beat anybody. We have a ton of potential.

It aint BVS as an eternal optimist like myself sees that number 3 in the SEC as off...maybe 5th or 6th not 3rd. There are a couple of teams down the list with enough talent to overcome average coaching and will be extremely tough to beat.

We have some very tough games coming up soon and will have to be on top of the details each play to win. Technique and execution will be the difference in winning or losing the Florida, LSU and Kentucky games.

Yeah. Pretty much.

The wheels could fly off for a number of reasons but UT has a very well coached and developed team this year. Some of the teams that they are better than... are more talented. Several UT teams over the past 18 years have been more talented. But this team is very well led. They have a very good culture. They work hard and play as a unit.

The Vols for the first time in a very long time are getting more from the roster than the sum of its parts.

The Pitt game is an excellent example of what is different now than when your BVS developed. UT shot itself in the foot in almost every imaginable way... and still found a way to beat a good team. Not a great team... but a good team. BTW, this game is going to look good in the rear view mirror considering Pitt's schedule. They will likely win out until they play Miami at the end of the year:

This is what I think as well and that is part of what scares me. As long as the "Parts" believe they can win, then they will win. But then there is the opposite which is BVS in a nutshell.

It's too early in the season to put much stock into these rankings. I personally would have Georgia 1st, followed by Alabama, Arkansas, then probably a tie with Tennessee and Kentucky. That would be my top five for now.

I think your point is exactly what a lot of people are missing. This team has a no loose mentality. They played their tails off the entire game. There wasn't a major drop off in talent or effort from the bench.
Pittsburg is a good football team and I was uncertain of the outcome going into this game. But, an immature team doesn't win that game on the road against a ranked opponent.
The Vols are not world beaters, there will be monumental hurdles with future opponents but, I am very pleased with how this team fought adversity, played as a team, and pulled out this win.
Clean up the mistakes and the monumental hurdles might be a little lower. GBO!

If we can finally get the monkey off our back and beat Florida, than we can state we are among the top 5 in the SEC. But we need to do it, not just wish it to be. Frankly the SEC (except Georgia) looks very impressive thus far. Of course neither does anyone else. Ohio State barely beat Notre Dame who got beat down by Marshall a week later. College football is goofy.

We will win 8 games with a little luck 9, we need DLINEMAN AND BIG BACKS before we are elite.
We need depth at linebacker, too. D Linemen we have; we just need a little more depth at that position. Our running backs are too light and small.

If Pitt's starting QB is back for GA Tech at least, they will make a run again. With this schedule, the Vols, KY, FL, MsSt, etc are all looking at minimum 10 win seasons.

Feels odd to be in this position after years of misery.
Definitely. Though we made alot of mistakes, we still won, and the way it turned out, will probably end up being a good confidence builder for what is sure to be quite a few close games this year.
