Butch's policy for injury news sequestration is what breeds all the negative speculation.

I think his policy backfires on its intended goal (which was to limit all the negative speculation) like we saw with M. North last fall. If he'd just release actual injury information, the Basilio's of the world wouldn't stir up all the controversy.

I could see keeping things quiet during game week so you don't tip off your opponent to anything... but its fall camp...there is nothing to be gained by keeping the identities of those injured and the severity of the injuries under wraps. JMO.

Man, it's easy to criticize leadership. This is not a commentary on Jones' coaching abilities, leadership decisions, or anything else. It's merely a statement of fact: criticizing those in leadership is easy, leading well is difficult.

If Butch would just do what we want him to do everything would be all better...

Just like the band-aid and kiss mommy used to give......

Maybe people should have more pride in their reporting.

Butch is under no obligation to give out that info

Just fall camp? You do realize we're 2 weeks away from kickoff

I think Butch should change his policy to no injuries. If he can't enact this simple policy change to avoid injuries then he should fire Coach Z. Saban hasn't had an injured player since 2007. How can we compete when we have players getting hurt? If Butch wants to call me, I'll tell him myself.

That's true, but he instituted the gag order on all the beat media last year over the M. North speculation. So the gag order was intended to curtail rumor mongering and internet speculation. My point is that policy has backfired and there is more speculation and injury doom and gloom than ever before (see Evan Berry).

If the goal is to end the speculation, then imo just release the gag order and let people report and ask questions about injuries during camp.

I'm still fine with keeping things quiet during game week where a competitive advantage can be had for making your opponent prepare in multiple ways.

I am a believer that the football coach should not report the details of any injuries.

Never provide the opponent with time to brainstorm and form strategy based upon injury reports.

"Chance is banged up a little." Next question...

Delfonic, I'm writing your name in for President. How do you spell it again?

Why get on Butch when the irresponsible media is really at fault? Maybe Basillio should take some pride and not resort to crap like this.

You also keep acting like we are months away from playing. There are 2 weeks

I don't blame the media for reporting the limited amount they know (or are allowed to disclose because of the gag order -- which if they violate they risk losing their credentials/access and in turn, their jobs). And, yes I get that we are two weeks from game day, but we are also still in fall camp. If an injury happens next week during game prep then absolutely there is no reason to disclose it.

I just think the whole gag order during fall camp and spring practice has had the opposite result that Butch intended when he instituted it.

Well you cant just say they are injured, then it goes to "How bad" "When will he be back" "Why isn't he back yet" "You said in another release he was looking good" "If not now then when" and so on and on..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Then you have no clue what's going on and your thread makes perfect sense. You think you have a right to know and the coach says you don't. Deal with it

This directly affects game prep. It's August, not April

If you all, as a fan base, are so immature that you have to spin yourselves up over speculation about a rumor, then you have some serious growing up to do.

Have you ever thought for a moment that maybe, just maybe, the kids privacy (for even a few hours) trumps your adolescent need for knowing everything about the life of a college kid?

There are laws that prevent the release of health information without the consent of the patient, it carries heavy fines. Speculation and hearsay will always exist here and every other blog site........personally, I don't believe fans or media are entitled to know this kind of detail.

Are injuries (medical issues) covered under HIPAA laws. If so the player has to give permission, before anything can be released.

Also, most of the players have aspirations of playing in the NFL. Injuries can effect a future teams perception of a player.

Protecting players future is also part of a coaches responsibility.

I think HIPPA only applies to medical professionals providing care for patients and the health plans/agents who cover them.

Pretty sure it does not extend to football coaches.

Having said that, Butch & Co still do have a responsibility to their student-athletes to protect their privacy appropriately (that being defined a little differently for players who have volunteered for a very public role in the known spotlight).

It's just not covered by HIPPA, I don't think.

I know as a Manager of a business we were held to HIPAA (corrected abbreviation) rules. As an employer we could not have access or divulge any health information unless the employee volunteered it, or said that it was okay. I realize the players are not employees though.

Good point. Your business probably provides health care coverage (through an insurance agent or HMO or the like), and so the limitation on providers sharing info might extend to your firm (or might be argued to extend that far in legal proceedings).

And now that you mention that, the University of Tennessee provides medical coverage to our athletes, so perhaps HIPPA does extend to them, as well.

*shrug* no lawyer here.

One thing's for sure: student-athletes sit at an uncomfortable crossroads between being private citizens who have full, unmitigated protection of the law, and high-profile public figures for whom all the privacy rules seem to be applied just a little bit differently. They're kind of one foot in each world.

It's very common to not disclose specific injuries. In hockey it is always a lower body or upper body injury. The guy can be in a cast from his toes to his knee and all they say is lower body injury. And I'm pretty sure this was the case before the HIPAA laws.

Yeah, that's mostly about providing tactical advantage, or at least preventing the next opponent from having a tactical advantage.

Which also comes into play here. It's just distinct from any privacy concerns.
