I can almost guarantee that. It will be a business decision.

Sometimes peoples own opinions cannot be trusted when making business decisions. For example, IF the vols were to go 9-3, finishing strong despite Butch people would not exactly see that as strong vote of confidence for a Butch jones led vols future. They would have little hope for next year, and see the 9-3 as a fluke, or remember the chaos, and debacle the season has been. They would understand that the SEC EAST will be forever out of reach and remember the in game failures all too vividly.

In short, the vols fans simply KNOW Butch too well at this point. We know who he is and what he is capable of. A Butch led future holds no surprises.

HOWEVER,lets say Currie hold a pole, at the end of the season. And fans get to decide Butch's future based on this poleing action.

The poll says...

Should Butch be fired after his 9-3 season?

Fact is, most vol fans (and all fans of other SEC TEAMS) would say NO. He should not be fired. The results would probably be something like 60% to keep, 35% to fire, and the obligatory 5% not sure.

So we would keep Butch, and probably fire Currie instead, because he asked the WRONG QUESTION.

Another off-season of Butch would result in little excitement, recruiting class disappointment, apathy and massive drop-off in season ticket sales, donations etc, due to the real issue. Very Low Consumer Confidence in Butch Jones. Very Low Excitement for the future under Butch Jones. Bubonic Apathy in the fanbase.

The end result would be a further damaged brand, limping along, empty seats, more media lynchings, more cliches and jokes.

It would simply be a stay of execution. And that helps no one.

The questions I ask now and those Currie must ask is...

1. On a scale from 0-10, What is your general level of excitement for a Butch Jones led Vol program in 2017?
1b. What was it in 2016?
1c. Estimate that level for 2018?

2. Does the program at present seem closer to, or further away from championships at present time?
2b. If Butch were to remain coach, predict the year he brings home an SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.

3. If Butch were to remain coach for the 2018 season do you see yourself attending more games next year or less?
3b. Or you more likely, or less likely to make donations in order to purchase season tickets?
3c. If you are a current season ticket holder, estimate in % your probability of renewal. From 0-10 what factor does Butch Jones play in that decision? Explain if other reasoning is deciding factor.
3d. Do you see yourself spending more in the upcoming season than you currently spend on Vols merchandise? Or less?

So play along if you like, what are your answers volnation?

I now think he's going to be here next season solely because you felt like your reasons for firing butch deserved another thread.

Butch is toast.

If he hasn’t won the SEC East by now, he never will.

If he goes 9-3, then his W-L record will have gradually improved year over year. This coupled with a bowl-win and a top-5 recruiting class will guarantee him 2018 and (depending on '18) 2019.

IMHO, if you want CBJ gone now or at season's end, you need to root for whomever the Vols opponent is.

This scenario only applies to a 9-3 season.

I just appreciate that you spell poleing the right way.
I think your positioning is well placed.
My position on anything CBJ related is that I would rather be skull f****d by a GROUP of Kodiak, Polar, and Grizzly bears running a train on me worse than happened to Leonardo DiCaprio in that movie 🎥 than for CBJ TO REMAIN OUR COACH.

Question (2A) I see the program much, much closer to being a championship team than it was in 2012...

Question (2B) I never see U.T. going to the SECCG with bUTch at the helm and I stand a better chance of winning the PowerBall than U.T. winning the SECCG under bUTch....

He is not going 9/3 unless we see some major upgrade on O this week with JG in there. I just dont have a lot of faith thats going to happen.

Has anyone noticed, when a poster goes on this rant, that they never come back and retort someone's comments. A 9-3 season with this young team would almost win him Coach of the Year for the SEC. As bad as this team has performed and to come back and go 9-3............why would UTAD fire him?.........not going to happen, heck 8-4 would still be classified and a great adjustment for any coach, maybe not Coach of the Year, but I would dare say that media would have something good to say.

I will say this.......again, there are teams that were predicted to compete for conference championships that are now considered an outside chance. These are traditionally powerhouses. With all the talent in Florida.......its Miami putting on a show by a coach who like Butch is well liked, but Georgia Fans wanted more. He left Georgia a far more stocked team than Butch ever got.........by a mile.

TL; DR

His future is dependent on two factors
1. Winning
2. Team Excitement

Team has looked dead all year; reflection of its on the field leaders and mundane play calling. No explosive plays. Swing, screen, and draw offense.

Either way, JG is our future

Yep, the doggies finally realized MR's ceiling was nine wins and should've won more championships with the talent on hand. Looks like CBJ has a similar ceiling.

If Butch goes 9-3 with a top 10 recruiting class he will get great offers coming in from everyone. After what he's been through this year there's no way he stays. So Bad year we fire him, good year he leaves on his own. We win both ways.

"Another off-season of Butch would result in ... a massive drop-off in season ticket sales, donations etc, due to the real issue. Very Low Consumer Confidence in Butch Jones."

I studied college game attendance and this is not consistent with the data. Schools located in non-urban environments, with low student/citizen ratios (meaning a lot of the local area attended the school) and few alternative teams (e.g., pro teams) do not experience a drop in attendance despite the W-L record.

The inside AD talk was that last year was the SEC East year. And Butch did beat UGA and FLA ... which he had to do. No, they didn't win ... but a vast improvement over the last few attempts.

This year, the expectation was that UT would have a down year. Inside talk was that UT would go 7-5, maybe 8-4, but most likely 7-5. So, going in ... and from the AD's point of view is ... nothing has changed.

If this is a purely business decision, the Vols forecasted a down year. And they pretty much in line with that. You may not like Butch as a coach (I don't), but the business logic was laid out last year.

Butch would have done a much better job if he simply stated, in plain English, "We look forward to 2017, but won't deny it, we will not have the team we had last year and will need to develop a lot of players to be competitive."

9-3 this season would give Butch a 19-21 SEC record after 5 seasons. I fail to see how that could be considered adequate progress given the recruiting classes over the same time period.

This is heresy on VN. Am entirely disappointed in season to this point, but agree there's no way he's fired at 9-3, and probably not 8-4, unless one of the losses is to Vandy, or other losses are really bad form (UGA). Two primary reasons is $$$ pay out, and secondly the recruiting class will have refortified itself to TOP 10, even if a few casualties.

We won't go 9-3, but if somehow that hypothetical played out there is no way Butch would be fired and no reason he should be fired, despite the illogical rantings of a few as demonstrated in the OP.

Let's not ignore the fact that he's not happy here. Just as likely he scores another gig on his own accord at the end of this season.
