List of names of former Vols that would have contributed but are no longer here.

QB Riley Ferguson

Rb T. Paulk
Rb D. Scott

WR Paul Harris
WR Ryan Jenkins
WR V Wharton

TE AJ Branisel
TE Daniel Helm
TE Nieko Creamer

DL J. Carr
DL J. Henderson
DL D. Hendrix
DL M. Sawyers
- Thats a formidable starting rotation at DL btw.

DB D. Payne

There's others that have left or injured permanently, but these are players that would be contributing.

Yet, our roster is deeper and more experienced than any team in our division.

HOW?

Because we weeded out the weaker players you listed above.

And that's not even the full list. Those are some good players on that list above.

This is how Butch always has playing time available for freshman. Yet, he has still built a complete roster.

For years 2007- 2014 we had one thing but not the other.

2012 Offense, but no Defense.
2009 Offense ok, defense ok, but no depth or special teams.

Butch has built depth for this year AND next year. Already.

In my opinion, the most talented player to leave under Butch Jones is Dewayne Hendrix (Pitt) and I doubt even he would be in our two deep rotation this year with all the talent and depth we have at DE... of course, he could have been moved inside. Of the other players listed by the op, only Daniel Helm would likely be contributing much. Some of those guys mentioned like Jason Carr, never played football again after leaving Tennessee and you say he would have been part of a 'formidable rotation'? He was upset at being moved to the offensive line.

Derrell Scott: Would be playing with Hurd, but he may have caused Kamara not to come. Upgrade.
Daniel Helm: Like Wolf w less physicality. Could have had a good season last year catching some balls. Croom will be better and about as physical.
Dwayne Hendrix: Don't know if he sees the field or not at our deepest position. Would his presence created a log jam that sent Kongbo to FSU. KK a big upgrade.
Michael Sawyers: Looked to have the physical tools to contribute this year. Another link to our new recruiting hotbed. We're strong there now.

Those four could have become good players for us IMO. The rest are really no loss at all.

The great thing about Butch has been that, when a guy leaves, he immediately replaces him with an equal or better player. This year the WR didn't make it b/c of grades and Butch lands a DL before fall camp. He's a beast at it!

or (in my opinion) the ones that didn't "want" to fit into his system.

It happens. Best of luck to them.

They wanted to be a part and either didn't know enough about what was expected or changed their focus or couldn't hang.

Paul Harris?

Don't you mean Alphonso Carter?

These guys may be good players, but the difference in most recruits is slim..

Brains and want to are more important, imo...

T. Paulk was the one I hated to see go, I'd like to have seen him tote the rock in O&W. But I'm more than satisfied with who we have.

Carr was a disappointment and couldn't gain playing time in a weak rotation and was labeled "soft". Scott and Paulk wouldn't steal carries from Hurd/Kamara.

The rest it makes you wonder what could be.

You left out Peterman - we saw how he contributed - Bambi in the headlights; but since he's doing so well at Pitt, Butch just must have missed something - uh-huh.

Really? You have no clue about college football or college sports in general. Players leave for many reasons. Get to know one of the players who have left before you bash them.

My point was to illustrate the football program builder - Butch Jones.

- He will always have playing time available for freshmen.

- Yet, still have talented veteran leadership at key positions. And now depth.

After a while - at least in the old days- once you get 3 or 4 talented classes in and start winning, Freshman playing time goes down.

Butch is in year four and is still playing freshman. That is a huge recruiting advantage.

A good coach is like a sculptor who carefully chips away the unnecessary bits until his work of art is finished.

I don't think Coach Jones consciously ran any of these players off but rather the process he has put into place will always expose those who don't buy into what he's doing.

I think that's about as well put as any of us could say it. Thanks, Brave.

Most of the players mentioned would have contributed very little to the program on the field. I don't blame them for wanting to get some playing time on another team.

Yeah, this, exactly. Most of the guys on the list haven't really had the chance yet to prove that they are capable of being key contributors. But even if they go on to successful futures (and I'm sure we all hope they do), that doesn't mean they ever would have thrived in Butch's system.
