I'm a little tardy in posting this, but I thought some may enjoy.

Butch spoke at the annual Boys and Girls Club of Memphis Steak & Burger Night a couple weeks ago. After expenses, his talk helped raise over $200,000 for an organization that helps keep kids in after school programs and off the streets.

It was the first time I've seen Butch in person. Prior to the speech he took pictures and signed mini footballs. I got to quickly introduce myself to him, shake his hand, and take a picture after standing in a long line for 30-45 minutes. Butch was extremely gracious and humble with the fans during that time. He was cool and collected in a crazy environment. He was a great representative of the University.

His speech was geared toward the kids in the audience. I'm hoping there was at least one future (Tennessee) 5 star prospect in the room taking heart. Here's the cliff notes:

-Your last name is your reputation.

-Fight through adversity. If you don't, you won't achieve your goals.

-Football is great for teaching kids life lesson because "football is life sped up." (I thought that was great). He talked about the joy of the team feeling like they had beat UGA last year, only moments later to feel the anguish and sadness that they were going to lose, and then just a few minutes later being legit convinced that someone was going to go up and get that ball in the end zone. And then the elation of that happening.

-To be good or great at anything, you have to do it "d.a.t. way." Details, Accountability, Toughness. Regarding Details, he told the Ray Allen story about Ray Allen practicing his back up jump shot that he ultimately drained against San Antonio in Game 6 of the 2013 playoffs. Spoelstra told Butch that Lebron and someone else on the Heat used to rib him hard about him practicing that shot over and over and over after practice and Ray continued to practice anyway. Regarding accountability, Butch told the kids to own their choices because their choices will own them one day.

-To guarantee success a commitment must be made, a plan must be laid ("a commitment without a plan is a dream"), and most importantly a price must be paid. :good!:

Thanks for that. Glad we have Butch Jones. Can honestly think of only one SEC coach that I would trade him for.

You know, CBJ catches a lot of grief on here and in the media. He does not always make the best game day decisions. I think he is still learning how to become a better coach and sometimes that causes growing pains which in the SEC = losses sometimes.

But I will say this about him... he conducts himself with class. He has turned around the culture at UT for the better. He has brought (for the most part) good representatives and young men into the program.

I think he realized that his "Best staff in America" wasn't up to snuff for what it takes to win in this league so he made the changes he thought he needed to and I hope he was right in the choices he made. If he can get the x's and o's figured out I think he could represent the university well for a long time..

CBJ wears a Bible verse from Philippians around his wrist. He has a passion for Christ and isn't shy about showing his faith.

And he gives good speeches that touch local communities.

I'm glad my coach is right with the Lord, he makes me proud to be a UT Vol fan.

Looks like pretty standard "let's motivate the kids" speak.
Hopefully, after pointing out the consequences of failure to have a life-plan, he ended his spiel with a flurry, ala Matt Foley:

I think the off the field accomplishments that go unnoticed make CBJ one of the most underrated coaches UT has had.Just my opinion but I really want him to succeed for all the right reasons and don't understand the folks who want him to fail, for any reason at all.

Great Post / thanks for sharing that !

A few more key wins and everything would be just great. Everything is just great, anyway.

I don't know I didn't see any new 'sayins' for 2017...maybe its too early...and not to be a contrarian but I don't think football is 'life sped up' I think standing at the 'chalkboard' trying to do a math problem that you didn't prepare for will teach you far more about life than football...it did me.

"Your last name is your reputation"

I love this. I have told our kids something similar, that their first name is what identifies them as a unique person and their actions reflect on themselves, but that their last name means they also belong to something bigger than themselves and their actions reflect on the whole family as well.

Can we get a dislike button Freak? After ten dislikes in a 24 hour period you can't login for 24 hours? TIA

Go back to the old way of doing it. We used to quote the post with +1. It meant you agreed with it (now you just click the like button).

So maybe just quote the post, and put -1. :)

I'm afraid that would drive me to move to the woods for 10-12 years. :)

Look at Saban's coaching history. It's way worse than Butch's comparatively.

Saban figured it out before the towns folk got to the castle with their pitch forks and torches and now he is the gold standard. Hopefully, Butch will figure it out too. Just zero room anymore to have an off year.

Lower it to 5 and make it a week.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions just sent a letter to federal prosecutors to always seek the maximum punishment for offenses.
