Butch Playing it Smart

Our offense was horrible. Painful to watch. Don't see it getting better until we find an OC who will throw the ball downfield. Jones is too conservative and DeBord just isn't a good OC. Butch did not play it smart. All Dobbs can do is run and Jones did not turn him loose.

I'm not a fan of trying to be vanilla and hide or save things for other, presumably tougher opponents. How about just run what you run and get so good at executing it with superior athletes that it doesn't matter whether or not the bad guys know what's coming? If you wanna hold back on a couple of "trick plays" and save em for your bigger rivals, like we did with Florida last year then ok, that seems sensible.

But otherwise, just go get real good and confident with your system and go run it no matter who the opponent is IMO. If we just tried the other way vs App State, to hold back evidently only run about 5 or 6 total plays out of the offense, I'd say the results were a great reason to never do that again. Jmo.

agree.

Butch/Debord clearly took out half the playbook v AppSt.

How many read-options did Dobbs run?

I don't remember any.

It was risky, but was clearly on purpose.
Dobbs is being told to hand it off clearly, just looks like a read option... But Im afraid its because they are trying to keep him from running the ball. BIG MISTAKE. for Dobbs to be successful, the defense has to believe he's running the ball himself 100% of the tim IMO.

I don't know as much as the coaches have forgot but running Hurd into the teeth on 1st down killed our offense and put the pressure on Dobbs. Still doing it in the 4th quarter. These guys make huge salaries and that is the best they could come up with in 9 months of work? I was expecting similar offense to the bowl game. Opposing coaches have that tape so nothing to hide.

Look they came out with a W, and no one is hurt. The game is behind them. On to Virginia tech.

Ha ha.
It's VN. It could 20 years and 3 coaches later, we have a good game, we will be reminded of this one. And Vandy 2013. And....

An LSU friend of mine asked me last night "It was ugly as hell, but are you guys aware that your team actually won?"

Anybody that looked at that game and thinks that CBJ got exactly what he wanted by "doing just enough to win" and "holding back" is fooling themselves. You're going to end up blowing your brains out when you realize the horrible truth. This team really lost, but somehow lucked into winning because of inept clock management and key mistakes at the very end of the game. Tennessee got the win by surviving, not by doing just enough. In short, they damn lucky that they were not the laughing stock of the weekend.

I wish I could see the look on these sunshine pumpers faces when Tennessee runs the exact same stupid neutered offense in the first half of the VT game.
