Butch Jones...

A QB that does not turn the ball over. A solid running game and a great defense is the one tried and true way to championships. Offensive firepower is fun but a great defense is way more reliable.

That's what I meant when I stipulated a "smart" quarterback. And I agree, it's still, and always will be, great defense that wins championships---like Seattle's. The key is they are going to have to be fast because some form of the read option, perhaps in combination with other formations, is a "fad" I don't see ending any time soon. Even Nick Saban is starting to recognize that.

I don't think Nick would change his formula. His QB's can't run a lick and he is the standard in college football right now. Seattle's wrinkle is the size in the secondary. Those players are big and fast.

Wow... Just throw him under the bus. I am happy my coach is on that list. Recruits see that and want to play for him.

Yes. And I think if Coach Jones is going to be successful here he may have to use his quarterbacks in a similar way and not attempt to run a true read option exclusively. That would be buying into a fad that isn't going to hold up in the long term, as many have suggested. But the constant threat of the read option in the hands of a smart, mobile quarterback with a good arm is the wave of the future, imo.

Agreed. I don't think we'll ever see the Gus Malzahn-Nick Marshall true running QB-style offense at Tennessee, at least not under Jones. As far as I can tell, he likes his running backs to run and his quarterbacks to throw, which suits me just fine, not that it really matters as long as we're winning. He's called his offense a "power spread" once or twice.

he didn't say would be the next coach...he said Butch could be a successful championship coach at the next level...then said everybody he talks to that knows Butch, says the man can flat out coach...

Let's just hope Butch has plans on staying at TN for awhile. There hasn't been this much excitement around TN FB in a very long time.

The situations would be entirely different. I'm not saying he would or wouldn't be a good NFL coach, but basing your opinion soley on this last season doesn't help your cause.

Also, I don't know how you could rank Stoops or Bielema as a better hire than Butch.

I'm not saying he was the third best hire, that's what the "experts" were saying before the season started. There's an article floating around here somewhere with that message in it.
