Butch Jones has had two stellar recruiting classes, but his record after 2 years at UT is a less-than-stellar 12-13. For him, 2015 is the money year, the payoff after 2 years of great recruiting. He needs 8, maybe 9 regular season wins to show that he and his staff can mold all that football talent into a winning team.

So what has he done at this most critical juncture in his career? He's hired as OC an old crony who hasn't done much of anything as a football coach in the past ten years. Jones is betting that DeBord will somehow blossom into a first-rate OC in the toughest league in football - a coach whose football acumen equals the talent of UT's 4- & 5-star recruits.

In essence, Butch Jones has bet career on DeBord. If UT stumbles against, say, UGA, UF, and Mizzou again, if we have blowout losses to OU & Bama because of an inept offence and just plain dumb playcalling, fingers will be pointed. But not at DeBord, rather at Butch Jones. He will have lost the huge bet he's made. In which case, Jones will be remembered for 2 things: a) a legacy of terrific football talent for the new HC we hire in 2016, and b) the guy who chose an ole pal over a career as HC at Tennessee.

2015 will be a very interesting year of UT football.

You couldn't have just read the other threads that say the same thing? The guy has had the midas touch and you go and do this. We get it, people are skeptical. For the last time we get it.

A few inconvenient facts stand in the way of your otherwise brilliant argument.

1. CBJ knows DeBord better than you do.
2. CBJ knows the team better than you do.
3. CBJ knows the team's needs better than you do.
4. CBJ knows how the team's needs and DeBord's skills fit together better than you do.
5. CBJ knows, as I and just about everyone else know, that he will not be fired in 2015. Even were the wheels to come totally off the bus, he would still get at least one chance to set it right again in 2016.
6. So it's not at all like a bet, where you put your money down and either win or lose it all immediately.

Aside from those nit picking details, I absolutely see your point.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, there might be a little blue ink in a couple of those lines.

You think he doesn't know this?

In fact, that's probably why he went with DeBord. In a critical time like this you want someone you are comfortable with and someone who isn't going to come in and make wholesale changes.

Butch picked who fit best with this team. I know you questioned the play calling but maybe you just don't understand their plays were very limited because of how bad the O line was. Butch knows this team he is putting together is very very talented. He did not need an up and coming OC he needed someone who doesn't need to make a name for themselves and keep the team focused on the prize.

Agree 100% OP.

He should have hired Bilichek right? Maybe urban meyer? You guys want to win even in the off season, even if that means we don't hire the right guy. Youre butt hurt because we didn't beat auburn or LSU for assistant coach hires. UT didn't beat other schools at the beginning with Jones's hire but we sure look pretty good now. It doesn't matter, only if we win games. please lord let the offseason end.

One thing about human nature that is hilarious. We like to make judgements and form opinions on matters that we severely lack any legitimate knowledge about the issue in question. I personally have enjoyed reading all the idiots that truly believe they have the capacity to make a logical, informed opinion in this situation.

If DeBo can make the O Line better, I think it will be hard to fail with the talent that we will have over the next few years.

What about with an NFL offensive line?

The same line that " underperformed " according to the lovers but had a NFL all rookie team player on it

Sure

Vol fans should stop blaming the players for everything

Prone to hyperbole much? The DeBord hire doesn't thrill me either, but this is a ridiculous post.

Not really, Jones is betting that with the talent that he has assembled at UT even Debord can get it done. It's apparent the way Jones recruits players and hires coaches that he believes the same philosophy as Fulmer who was famous for stating "it's more about the Jimmie's and Joe's than the X's and O's.

Or, he thinks he knows more about Football than everyone else

Butch remains in complete control of his destiny, this hire's sole purpose is to ensure his continued existence within a bubble of obsequious minions.

Thanks to the OP for such a thought provoking unique analysis of the situation. I would have never thought of it like this.

Agree 100% OP.
Then youre both ignorant. Nothing short of a HUGE violation of the morality clause jn CBJs contract or a bigtime NCAA investigation and violationsbcould possiblybcost him his job this season. To say we will possibly be getting a new coach in 2016 based on wins and losses is flat dumb. We could lose 8 games for tge first time ever and still have him as long as it resulted from Dobbs going down early or something similar.CBJ WILL BE OUR COACH TIL 2017 WIN LOSE OR DRAW. GET OVER IT. Lucky for us we will win the east twice by then.

Another idiotic post by a Local Yocal Expert. 99.9% of UT fandom couldn't name ONE OC outside of Kiffin. Heck most couldn't name the one that left! Get over yourself......CBJ bets his career on EVERY decision he makes
