First off I really do love Butch Jones but why is he so conservative in the 4th quarter? His philosophy is to run up the middle every play and then play with a lead and I honestly didn't see him really learn his lesson either last year. I mean we were lucky as hell against Georgia that our punter bailed us out with that coffin kick after Butch again decided to run the ball every single play and then punt. I guess I just envision us being up 10 in the fourth against Florida and Butch doing the same old things.

So do you think he changes his philosophy and pulls a Steve Spurrier this year or goes Johnny Majors and sits on big leads again this year?

He learned his lesson mid-way through the year. He's learning to coach in this league just like the players had to learn how to play in this league. I would not worry about it in the future.

Kinda thought the mods might merge each individual sentence into any one of 50 threads.

Without just picking the whole statement apart, the only real answer is - we will see.

People will jump my ass for this post but I really like Butch honestly. I just didn't see him change his philosophy in the 4th quarter at any time last year against a quality opponent. When he got the lead he sat on the lead and prayed the game would end instead of going out and being more aggressive.

This topic is either going to quickly fade into nonexistence or blow up like a turtle strolled in here.

Northwestern disagrees with you

Guys I hope he goes away from being ultra conservative but I just never seen him change. I honestly would rather play from behind then have a lead.

No one has issues with your concerns. This is just such a pointless topic. It's been debated in just about every single thread on VN somewhere in said thread. This just seems like a pointless topic meant to stir a heated debate for no reason.

Northwestern was a nice win but they were not on Florida, Oklahoma, or Georgia's level. The big ten is a joke outside of three teams and everyone else is like Vandy or Missouri.

They were better than Florida last year and still in a pretty good bowl. The post you responded to said that in the second half of the season you could see that Jones changed in his regard to the 4th quarter and you said you never saw that. NW was the best opponent we played in the second half of the season. NW still beat a very good Stanford team (played and won the Rose Bowl) and a very good Wisconsin team. Give the guy some credit

That's a good point they did beat Stanford last year. Sorry for making anyone mad but I'm just ready for some football.

Never be sorry! :)

It's just been a really heated debate in several threads and there's honestly no true answer until the season starts.

...and that is what concerns me. We seem to have a mental-block when it comes to UF. In the back of our players' minds, I have to believe a small voice is saying..."Somehow, someway, at sometime, we'll do something stupid and they'll score and win". And that is exactly what happens.

The article on the front page of the KNS after UT beat UF in 1998 (on a missed FG in OT by UF), was "11 Angry Men". Unless UT is pi$$ed off in the most unusual way, we will play tepidly and "not to lose".

Many will tell you that this is the first time in the last 11 years that we have the talent to beat UF and that you cant go by the game streak history :) Oh that and you are a self-loather :)

I don't see Butch changing either, but I don't worry about it now because we got Shoop running the D. Our problem last year was getting conservative on Offense AND Defense when we had a late lead. Shoop is not Janeck and will stay very aggressive until the game is done.

I personally think Shoops aggressive style is the number one reason Butch wanted him so bad. An aggressive D can close out a game just as quick as a aggressive O

Yup Northwestern would have beaten Florida in that bowl game imo. In all honesty we just have been playing Michigan and Florida should have been playing NW.

That said I'm not complaining over blowing out the 13th ranked team in the country.
