NEW YORK — Reggie Bush says he is forfeiting his Heisman Trophy.

The New Orleans Saints' running back released a statement Tuesday saying he would give back the award that he won in 2005 while he was at Southern California.

It's the first time college football's top award was returned by a recipient.

I still say he earned the trophy. Don't really care to see him give it back.

He did, but earning that trophy (aside from the hype) reflects on the school as well. Without incentive, might his Heisman glory have gone elsewhere?

It's a no-win really. Did he earn the trophy? Sure. Does USC deserve to list it among their achievements? Maybe not so much.

It's his choice, and if the Heisman trust wants to rescind it, that's fine too (as USC and Bush both don't claim it anymore) but don't give it to Vince Young.

Maybe we can start a write in campaign to get Garry Shandling the Heisman he deserves....

Really, though, Bush's 'self reporting' seems like a plea for them to say 'Aw shucks, Opie' and give it back.

I'd rather see him go all David Koresh on 'em and make the ncaa come in and take it from him.

When is OJ giving his back?

why would OJ give his back? the only reason bush is doing this is because he was ruled ineligible in college.
what he does (or anyone for that matter) has nothing to do with what they did in college.

OJ has not been ruled ineligible while he was in school

Clearly Bush's fault here. When is his administration going to stop screwing America?

Agreed. VY shouldn't want it either, under the circumstances.

vince doesn't really seem to be lobbying for it either, from what I've been reading

Now on the other hand, Mack Brown and Texas are just because it would give them another Heisman to display in their trophy room (use for recruiting purposes, etc)

they'll most like just vacate it though, which feels like the right choice

young said he'd take it if they sent it to him. pathetic response.

Vince Young doesn't need the Heisman - AFC South Blog - ESPN

"I definitely want it, I definitely want it. But he won it fair and square definitely, and it's much respect to Reggie, man. He had a great career and he's already won a Super Bowl before me. I'm already mad about that.

"But at the same time I am definitely happy for him, man, and he is definitely the Heisman Trophy winner for that year. But if they send it over to me I am not going to say no to it.”

See, I'm reading that a bit more as "I'm not saying no if they say 'here, we're now giving this to you' but I'm not going out of my way asking for it; Bush was the Heisman winner that year - I recognize that - and he should still be recognized (by people/everyone) as having performed and earned it that season"

Brown's the one that's bothering me more right now, b/c not only was he going out and lobbying for something like this, but I can't fathom his lobbying as much more than "I want to better the school's / my recruiting angle"
