Coach Cal's Take: John Calipari, coach of the nation's new No. 1 team, the Memphis Tigers, shared some interesting thoughts about UT and the SEC last week.
Calipari told Seattle Times columnist Bud Withers that the Vols can't win a head-to-head recruiting battle with the Tigers in Memphis:
"Tennessee will try to come here and recruit some, but the kids we want here, we're going to get.''
This year, the top player in Memphis, Elliot Williams, chose Duke over either school. Leslie McDonald, the 2009 top target, has Memphis and UT on his short list, along with several other high-profile programs.
Calipari also said the Vols, "foul, like on every possession.''
Underscoring his lack of enthusiasm for UT's Feb. 23 visit to the FedEx Forum, Calipari had this to say about SEC teams:
"If they want to play us, they should put us in the league. ... But they don't want you in the league. They just want to use you.''
He allowed that UT this year is "the most talented team to come into our building" in his eight years at Memphis.

I'll be honest, after reading this stuff, I hate Tiger High and Coach Cal even more than I did. I didnt think that was possible.

He's got the little brother syndrome, bad. Not because of on the court performance; Memphis is most usually better than us. However, you can tell he's pissed that Memphis has to be part of the University of Memphis, rather than a school like UT that gets better facilities, better funding, etc. More, he's stuck in Conference USA rather than a big boy conference. I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time I've heard him talking about this stuff.

Cal is a putz.

Enjoy that ranking while it lasts.

What are the Vols eating for lunch Feb. 23?

Whatever Memphis is having.

He's a good coach trying to hold his home court (city of Memphis)... hard to blame him for staking his ground. And if it weren't for Feb. 23, he'd be staring at an undefeated season. Man, that's going to be some game...

As said before Cal is just trying to stir the pot because he has to do everything to be a father figure to those thugs in Memphis and give them something to look up to...That game is going to be something else...A lot of fouls and a lot of talking will be expected...I just hope we shut his mouth!

I'm just crossing my fingers it isn't a Texas repeat... I like to think that this team is beginning to show what it will take to have a chance of winning this game - but they still have to put it all together on a consistent basis.

If you think TBA and the Pratt Pavilion are a better combination of facilities than the FedEx Forum and the Finch Center, you're kidding yourself.

the forum is for the Griz, so in a sense they are little brothers to them

I hope we don't need Cal's comments to find motivation against the (probably) #1 team in the country

I don't think he is being crazy about the whole SEC teams thing. East Tennessee isn't exactly fertile recruiting grounds for Memphis. Tennessee certainly benefits more than Memphis. Memphis wins, nothing changes. Tennessee wins, and it helps our image nationally and within the state.

Get real? Dorsey has been in three incidents on Beal street in a year. He climbed on a bar in a strip joint and threw money in the air to make it rain. When asked to get down Taggert, Robinson, and Joey beat the crap out of the guy.

That is thuggery. How many games did they miss?
How about Jeremy Hunt reporting to an insurance co. that he had sixty thousand dollars in mink coats burn in his apartment. They are thugs. Cal is recruiting the kid from New Jersey that is a possible accessory to murder.

Wher did an inner city kid get money to "make it rain?", or buy mink coats?

Ask cal about Thadeus Young and Williams when he talks about getting whoever he wants in the City.
They are good but solid citizens they are not.

He is suspected of being in a car involved in a drive by shooting, in which his cousin killed a guy. He has not been charged but has body gaurds at his games in fear of retaliation.

What charge was joey charged with in the "Make it Rain" incident? Nothing that is the Memphis way. Let the subs take the fall.

The kid is suspected of being involved in a murder!

If you think Bruce wouldn't take Evans in a heartbeat, you need to smarten up.

A lot of coaches take chances on great talent, some pan out some don't. Most successful programs have had their fair share of "problem" players, some that make the news, some that are hushed up, and some that leave quietly in the night. I am not a fan of Calipari, never have been, never will be, and I am betting #1 or not he won't cut NC nets.
My old football coach had a saying posted on his bulletin board, "A jackass never won the Kentucky Derby, be a thoroughbred." I think Memphis has some great players, Rose especially, but when crunch time comes, they ain't winning the derby.

As always be a Memphis fan and continue to justify it.

I went to school with a kid named Travis Cozart. He is, in my opinion one of the greatest natural athletes I have ever seen. There is no doubt that he would have helped Tennessee win games in the early ninties. However, he was a criminal and no matter how you spun it that is the way it was. He was kicked out of UT just after spring practice. Played some proball and then went to prison. Sometimes no matter how good you are you just are not welcome.

If the kid is involved in a murder then I do not think Bruce Pearl would have him on the team. Maybe I'm just wearing orange tinted glasses. However, the thug quotient with the tigers is much higher than Tennessee has ever been under pearl.

I hear that East Tennessee is in a record drought maybe we can bring in Dorsey and Taggert and make it rain.
