The 68 season was the greatest year I have ever seen a pitcher have. In my opinion Bob Gibson was the best of the best. Due to his 68 season Major League Baseball lowered the pitching mound. RIP Mr Bob Gibson

Jamir Johnson questionable

Looked like his hammy was bothering him when he came out late in the 4th last week.

Hopefully not pulled or a severe strain. Those can have a way of lingering for months & keeping someone from being 100%. He's a staple in the 2-deep even when Wanya beats him out for the start.

He was a little before my time but Bob Gibson was one of the legends that wowed me learning about the game as a kid.

From what I understand Bob Gibson may have been the most intimidating pitcher of the post-WW2 era. No doubt he had the best 1,000 yard stare. I've seen enough of those highlights.

I don't know if MLB will ever be able to produce a pitcher with his kinda fortitude again. Between the post strike-94 juiced balls(I'm a believer), the steroid blind eye(veritable encouragement IMHO), allowing teams discretion with park dimensions ..... MLB really didn't think through the rapid evolution of sports science & nutrition. It used to be as rare for a hitter to be able to consistently make contact with pitches in the high 90's as it was for pitchers to be able to consistently throw in the high 90's. Sports science & nutrition more than any of the aforementioned reasons, high pitch velocity + solid contact = further trajectory, is the reason for the modern day HR deluge.

The biggest reason we might not get another Bob Gibson? MLB embracing the wussification of sports. Now days they fine & suspend pitchers for intentional bean balls. In Bob Gibson's day you got brushed off the plate once with a warning and then it was your own fault if he had to bean you.

These things have a way of backfiring. Hockey injuries have skyrocketed due to cheapshots ever since the NHL started cracking down on enforcers.

Among the fondest memories of my childhood listening to Harry Carey and Jack Buck calling Cardinal games and Gibby and Brock (among others) dominating the NL. Gibby was the ultimate competitor and his no hitter against the Pirates is forever etched in my mind!

Most annoying broadcaster ever (IDK I'd throw Mike Shannon in there as well. I was on the road for Thursday's game and had to listen on the radio. I looked everywhere for a ice pick to stick in my eye. I thought it would be less painful than listening to Shannon) but he was a respected Cardinal all the way!

I once heard Red Schoendienst say Gibson was impossible. "If I went to the mound too early to pull him he'd get mad and tell me to get back to the dugout and if I went too late to pull him he'd ask me what took me so long. So I just generally let him decide when to come out and he was usually right"!

My wife had a great uncle who pitched for the Cleveland Indians back in the 30's. I had a long conversation with him in January 1976 about the game. He told me once he was pitching against the Yankees in NY and the game went into extra innings. He had to keep pitching because they hardly ever pulled a pitcher back then. He said "I was so tired if I had hit a batter square in the nose with the ball it wouldnt have drawn blood". He was disgusted (even in 1976) with the way relief pitchers were used and the lack of toughest. But Gibby was one of the tough ones for sure. I would give anything to have that conversation on video. He died not long after that at 87 years old.

Not sure who had the more intimidating stare, Gibson or Summit. I lived through both and I vote the Summit stare was more intimidating and fearful.

sucks Shamburger is out, but at least we're not playing against Shi Smith. Slaughter did some good things last week, but that was a tall order Ansley asked of him to man-up against Smith. Slaughter was recruited to play safety. But he looks faster than Bryce Thompson.

Really good post! You are exactly right about pushing people off the plate. In the Cards/Padres games Thursday night if ANY HITTER regardless of who they were showed as much disrespect and self-centeredness as Tatis and Machado did in that game there was no question at the next plate appearance they were getting knocked down and maybe intentional hit. It was a way to keep the game pure. As a kid who grew up in the 60's and 70's watching and playing baseball, what we see today is a totally different game. Its developed into a home run/strike out display and I miss the pure strategy of the game from then. And life rolls on.

Guess you can throw in Sonny Liston's stare. But agreed on Summitt.

I'm a generation behind you. The bash brothers got my fandom going in the late 80's. By my teens in the early 90's, I knew the real treat was seeing Ozzie Smith, Vince Coleman, & Ricky Henderson. Or Nolan Ryan giving Robin Ventura a country arse woopen, lol.

I was a die hard until about the early to mid 2000's. MLB's hypocrisy with roids, alleged small market owners cooking the books, & a colloquial refusal to implement salary caps soured me.

At most I'll casually observe and keep up with it now. I'm glad I severed my (veritable) emotional ties to it about 15+ years ago.

I never saw how 1 dimensional the game would become. Throughout it's history the ebb & flow of dominance hitterVSpitcher would pretty much vaccilate every 10 years. Kids would see pitchers had the upper hand & realize a hot bat was the quickest ticket to the bigs and vice versa.

This generation of baseball stars still play defense, but I wonder if that quality will start to erode. Or would the modern games defense still look good without splits & shifts?

Meh.... If it's what the kids want...
