Bruce Pearl is out as basketball coach

I hope like hell I am wrong, but I am afraid our men's bball team is going to plunge back to the depths of mediocrity again...

I really hope I'm wrong tho...

Sad day for Tennessee Basketball... End of an era. Best Tennessee bball coach EVER, no doubt. Here's to hoping that the moron Mike Hamilton picks the right guy to take UT to the top.

Hopefully Hamilton doesn't pick anyone...his ass needs to be fired

I completely understand why Bruce had to be let go. He did it to himself, and that is perhaps the saddest part. I appreciate the enthusiasm, the passion, and the embracing the UT traditions. I am very disappointed in the whole situation.

I am not looking to get into the urinating contest between the pro and anti Pearl crowds. I do have one question. Why are so many overly confident, IMO, that UT can make a great hire at this time and not skip a beat? Someone help me to understand, so I can feel better. I am no basketball guru, don't claim to be. I just know that the situation in Knoxville is not good right now (putting it mildly). I don't see an established coach wanting to get involved in the fiasco that is the UTAD at this time. Possible sanctions, an unhappy fanbase, most prominent players more than likely gone, recruits jumping ship, an AD that has made bad decision after bad decision do not paint a pretty picture of UTBB right now. I would honestly like to feel as confident as some here that things will be fine; I just don't see that being the case whether Pearl stayed or didn't.

I loathe Mike Hamilton. Not because of this situation alone. He has bungled EVERYTHING he has touched save fundraising. All this crap went down under his watch, and the buck stops with him. Bungled firing of Fulmer (I supported the decision not the handling of the decision), the Kiffin fiasco, not properly monitoring the Kiffin fiasco, hiring Todd Raleigh, the Pearl fiasco and failure to properly monitor said fiasco, the torpedoing of the men's NCAA tourney game, etc are inexcusable. The only other job that one can screw up this badly and this often yet still be employed is a weatherman. Hamilton should be gone and gone immediately.

Got some news for you: During the time of UT's best basketball teams, the NCAA invited 16 and then 32 to its tournament. At least four of Pearl's teams WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THE FIELD from the late 60s to the mid 70s. At least two of Pearl's teams WOULD NOT HAVE MADE THE FIELD, when it was expanded to 48 teams in 1979.

It's utterly ridiculous to claim Pearl was a once in a lifetime coach. He hasn 't had one single player that would have started on the 1976 or 1977 teams

This is a really bad comparison and you have to throw that out. There are so many rules differences and scholarships as a whole were handled different back then as well. As far as Pearl not having one single player that could start for the 1976 or 1977 teams you have got to be kidding. Tobias Harris is projected to be a first rounder so basically that means we had 5 lottery picks on the 1976 or 1977 teams. If you want to argue with me that's fine but at least use common sense. But if you want to use the Pearl didn't have as talented teams arguments....You actually just supported my argument because that means he did more than Mears with less talent.

Let them. Im telling the truth im a Freshman at ut and most everyone i know agrees. My whole life i never knew basketball at ut existed.

Since you didn't receive a proper education from the men in your family....you might want to research Pat Summit, just in case...yeah, sure, it's women's basketball. But She is a once in a life time coach.

I'm not overly confident. I know that we have all the ingredients to make it happen (great facilities, proven support, tons of money) and I know that hiring a good basketball coach should be dramatically easier than hiring a good football coach. But I'm certainly not confident that we won't screw it up anyway.

However, I'm 100% convinced that the NCAA was going to bend us over so badly if we kept Pearl that we didn't really have a choice but to go with somebody else. Pearl's a good coach, but he's not so good that he's worth the giant hole we would have had to dig for ourselves to keep him.

Thanks, I know Pearl had to go. No issue with that other than I wish Pearl would have used much better judgement.

I just don't see anything going on in the UTAD to have ANY confidence whatsoever that we will make a good hire. Zero confidence in the current regime, and deservedly so, IMO.

so when do we get our first drunken pissing on a T-shirt (or hammy scarecrow) youtube video?...

Also, how long before we find a dimond in the rough?...

I am honestly surprised at how quiet this board is tonight. I figured we would have some meltdown and good ole arguments. little to nothing, though. where is everyone?
