Bruce Not Only Ejection at Today's Game

With about 32 seconds left in the game, the white-headed official had a fan tossed from the arena. I wasn't close enough to hear what was said, but noticed the official motion at one of the yellow-shirted security guys, point to the fan sitting at courtside, and give the "toss him" signal.

Not sure if that happens a lot these days, but struck me as odd that the official couldn't just let it roll off his back for the remaining 30 seconds of play.

Fitting end of the past two days if you ask me.

Are you sure it was for something the fan said? Might have been another form of disruptive behavior. Or throwing something.

I am tired of these officials acting like the game is about them. IMO just a bunch of kids who got picked on in high school now on a power trip. Same as another sect of society.

For some reason I happened to be watching the official at the time. He had his back to the crowd right in front of where this fan sat.

Official turned, motioned for yellow shirt.

Assumed fan was talking smack. Fan got an ovation from that seating section as he was escorted out.

It was during a time out I believe. Courtside across from UT bench.

I was right behind the guy. He looked at the ref and said "You suck" and the ref looked at him and the guy said "Yea you know i'm talking to you, you suck" and the ref shook his head and threw him out. Absolutely pathetic. And there was 30 seconds left in the game too.

Was it the same guy with the, "Get off your knees ref, you're blowing the game."? The ref didn't seem to be happy with that gem midway through the 2nd half.

Bruce Benedict was not a very good baseball player and even worse as an official. Leave the fans alone. As long as they stay at their seat yelling at the refs is part of the game. I have officiated for 26 years and have never thrown out a fan yet not even thought about it.

Well the game was televised on ESPN and they hate us......so my guess is ESPN was behind the rejection :)

was nearby as well and this is exactly what happened, I was kinda shocked, it wasn't even like he cursed at the ref or anything

Why does the ref have the authority to have a fan removed from the game?

It was kinda weird to see the UT security guy almost break his neck to do the ref's bidding and get rid of the fan.

That might be protocol, I don't know. But does that security guy work at the ref's behest or for UT. What I am saying is, shouldn't the security guy get the instruction from some higher up at UT rather than the ref from the court?

If I had been the yellow shirt security guy, I would've looked at the ref and responded "No can do, you do suck" when told to remove the fan.

Finally, as big and fat (or really old as the case may be) as most of those security guys are, the fan could've juked around for the 30 seconds remaining in the game and not actually have been tossed. No way our court security could catch anyone.

I would disagree but being an official as I have been, and you are, what does this tell you about the hierarchy, who gets promoted and who does not. It tells you the truth, that as you go through the system for officiating, talent many times counts for nothing. It's often a Good Ole Boys system of in-crowd and not-in-crowd as to who gets what game assignments, promotions, etc. Who goes to the bars with the Assignment Coordinator of organization Officers.
This is true through NFHS, NCAA and professional officials.

I have and it depends on the situation and what the guidelines we are given regarding fan interaction and unsportsmanlike participation.

At the college level, I can agree with you. HS, eh, probably still but you know as well as I do that this kind of sh** grates on you especially over time, as the season wears on. Especially if you are calling a lot of games and getting worn down physically.

If it's a game where grade school kids are involved and I got some Dad who thinks I am his personal, verbal whipping dog, I'll give him one warning, in person, in front of the world, his friends and anyone else who is sitting in his vicinity and the next time, I run his sorry butt gone. :machgun:

Baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer...no matter. The kids have to know this is intolerable adult action. Truth is, they know too.

It is, the security guys are told that if an official wants a fan to be removed, hesitate no further, toss him. There is usually good reason.

Nope buck stops and starts with the officials. it's called "game management".

Then I would go to the scorer's table, get the Head of Security and run both of you.

Most officials I have worked with bust their humps (or I wouldn't work with them) and to have some two-bit punk with enough chump change to buy a ticket crawling up your rear end, insulting, calling out foul names and generally making your life miserable as you sprint up and down the floor miles and miles over a game is pure, unadulterated BS.

You're full of forum bravado, why don't you throw on the stripes and hang a whistle around your neck and see how well you can do when you have thousands of people wanting to eat your children and burn your house down for making a call that isn't favorable?

Clue: When you have dozens of possible calls nearly every second, to be able to pick and choose which ones you want based on bias is damn difficult thing to do. The best of the best officials can do this, most simply can't ferret out the information to show their so-called bias.
