Bruce Feldman's Top 5 Heisman Trophy candidates after Week 5 | FOX Sports

4. Derek Barnett

Once again, the junior D-lineman helped bail the Vols out of a deep hole. His sack/forced fumble gave UT a lead at UGA and a few minutes later, he got pressure on Jacob Eason and forced an INT. Barnett's leadership is also off the charts, as Tennessee finds its way back to prominence despite being without three of their best players on D.

Glad to see a great player giving it his all rather than simply saving himself for the draft. Thank you Derek. Two straight weeks he's made huge plays that possibly won us the game.

Barnett's stat line last two games

10 total tackles, 6 solo tackles, 4 sacks, and a PBU. Against two of UT's biggest rivals.

He is the opposite of most guys He goes to sleep against lesser opponents but when they game is on the line he turns on that other gear. I love it but it is gonna hurt him come time for evaluations for the NFL they are gonna say he has a problem with motor. I don't think this is true but his stats make it seem so. It can be spun either way but when evaluating they are gonna look at cup half empty. Instead of "he steps up big come crunch time" they are gonna see him like a randy Moss where he takes plays off.

I have never noticed him taking plays off in a game. He is normally getting double and triple teamed. I think what happens is later in games teams start thinking he is not as good as they thought and slack on the double teams. like last night on the sack for TD they had a TE on him and a RB chipping. Whoever called that protection is hating life. I wonder if it was because those 2 were switching out a lot... I noticed a lot of times Vereen and Barnett would swap sides right before the snap. Maybe they did that to get him away from double teams.

It's called pacing. You can't go 100% and expect to make a difference at the end of the game.

And it's not like he wasn't getting penetration the first three games. VT ran away from him, App st. He had 7 tackles and ran people down. 5 tackles again Ohio. He's a difference maker that stays at it and eventually gets sacks. I don't think people really appreciate DB like they should.
