Brian Kelly to LSU

BOLD PREDICTION ALERT:

Fickell bolts on Cincy and heads to ND and coaches ND in CFP because

Disheartened Cincy (hears Fick is leaving for ND) loses to Houston in AAC Championship Game allowing ND to slide into 4th place in CFP.

#CheckMyStats
I’d guess if he does take the ND job nothing will be announced till after the playoffs if they make it.

LSU Contract details for Kelly. Not media speculation, actually released by LSU:

LSU shared in their official release that Kelly's deal is for 10-years and worth $95 million, before incentives kick in. With his $500k annual retention bonuses, Kelly's deal is actually worth $100 million...and assuming he makes a bowl game every year that takes the base value to $105 million*.

Incentives for the contract include:
  • $75k for playing in the SEC title game
  • $150k for winning SEC championship
  • $500k for becoming bowl eligible*
  • $100k for making a New Years Six Bowl
  • $200k for making the CFP Semifinal
  • $300k for making the College Football Finals
  • $500k for winning the college
  • $50k for SEC Coach of the Year
  • $75k for National Coach of the Year honors
The most interesting part of the contract may be the buyout section.
LSU, who has fired their last two head coaches after they'd led them to national titles, would owe Kelly 100% of his remaining salary if they were to fire him after he brought a national title back to Baton Rouge. If they were to fire him for cause, they would owe him 90% of his remaining salary.
If Kelly were to terminate his employment while Scott Woodward is still in place as the athletic director, he would owe:
  • $4 million in the first year of the deal
  • $3 million in year two
  • $2 million in years three through the end of the contract

Sounds like a bad move.

Easier path to the playoffs at ND than LSU.

A lot more talent available at LSU. 6th best state for blue chips, no in state competition. Also none of the annoying ethics that ND insists on having.

I hate to quote finebaum, but today on his show he pointed out that Les Miles and Orgeron managed to win nattys at LSU. Let that sink in a minute.

and if he gets caught cheating and fired, he gets 90% of his remaining contract. Wonder if he will cheat??? LOL

Likely there are clauses that he can be fired for cause, just like Pruitt.

But maybe you are pointing out that in Louisiana cheating is encouraged? lol

The contract says if he's fired for cause he gets 90%. The contract details were posted earlier. It's a dream contract for a coach

He did have the ND wins vacated TWO years, 2012 and 2013, for staff cheating or other improprieties. By the way, he also had a 4-8 season at ND after he had been there a few years, while Orgeron never had a losing season at LSU. Orgeron's 5 loss season in 2020 got him on the hot seat; CBK had at least 3 5-loss seasons at ND, not counting the 4-8 one, or the 2 with all the forfeits.

Trace Armstrong is worth every penny it would seem.

I heard from an LSU big wig that Rohan Davies mom was going to conjure Lennay Kekua back from the grave and that she would serve as the crootin cordnator . Stay tuned

FWIW LSU did recover nicely in bringing in a big name with CBK, results TBD.
LOL!!!

They haven't had a coach other than Coach O that has meshed with them coming into the job..... Les Miles and Nick Saban weren't Cajun people.

Les Miles oddly fit in with LSU with his eccentric personality. .

Fun fact. Remember the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl? I do. One of the first sponsored (and ridiculously funny named) bowl games. The LAST Poulan Weed Eater Bowl game ended with LSU beating Notre Dame.

Lane Muffin to ND possibly

Lol. That is Freeman’s job to lose. If he coaches the playoff (if they make it) and competes, he’ll be the favorite. If they go NY6 and wins, he will be the favorite. Fickell would be the only other one. Would be interesting since he was freeman’s boss last year and they are best friends. Interesting to see if Freeman would go to LSU or stay at ND if Fickell gets it

Found a PDF file of the actual terms. The media report I copied and pasted above is wrong on the termination for cause part. Kelly gets nothing if terminated for cause.

First look at Brian Kelly's contract with LSU

This will be `a fun one to follow Jimbo did finally beat Saban, but are faithful at TAM happy with their ROI so far? He for sure was a splash hire and could be a great investment, but there are no guarantees out there. I am over these big contracts with all the guarantees. Prefer incentive based contracts with teeth.... Big wins get big bucks.... cheat and get nothing.

College football is getting so out of control because of money. I don't see how it can continue to sustain itself. Supposedly Riley's contract at sc is $110 mill (don't know the length), $6 mill home, use of a private jet including for family, and his homes in OK paid off.

Maybe private institutions can keep this madness going but I don't know about public ones. Fans and supporters can only be bleed so much for they say enough especially when the product becomes mediocre or poor. Plenty of other things to do with our time and resources.

A good coach will pay for himself. Saban has established that model. The head coach is what can make or break a football program.

Will Kelly work out? Who knows. He has about as good a track record of anyone not named Saban or Swinney. Throw Fisher in there to if you want.

But inflation isn't just happening at the grocery. My guess is USC/LSU/Mich St already foresee more money coming in on tv contracts, especially LSU with the SEC adding Oklahoma/Texas, and are getting ahead in setting the new floor for the highest paid coaches. People freaked out over what Saban was being paid in 2006. Now that number is pedestrian.

At the same time these aren't the usual coaching changes. Normally you don't see moves like this. If you want an established head coach to leave his top tier program, you better be willing to pay them significantly more than what they're getting already. And normally there's also some other factors for the coach to make that decision.
