He seems like the sort that Fulmer would like to me. Didn't Doug Matthews say Fulmer would like a defensive minded guy. Fulmer also made a comment about the fact that he was a coordinator when he got his start, so I think he could go have an affinity for that route.

Here's a video that makes me think Venables seems very solid (and intelligent.)

BRENTVENABLES - YouTube

Also, I have an inkling that Venables did not like Currie due to his K.St. Snyder history. Venables is a K. St. graduate and Currie and Snyder are sworn enemies. Maybe the enemy of the enemy is my friend? Remember Fulmer's comment about there being candidates that might be interested now that were not interested before?

Thoughts on Venables?

Venables has said numerous times that he only wants to be a DC and that is what he likes to do. He may take a HC job, but I do not see it. Especially with his son set to play for Clemson.

I put Venables in my 1st Tier. No head coach experience is a risk, but it's offset by his incredible results as a DC. I also think that Venables might be the type of hire that would at least give us a shot at luring Tee Martin back as OC. Obviously, Tee wants to be a Head Coach someday, but with Venables being a defensive guy, he'd likely give complete control of the offense to Tee, which could greatly improve Tee's resume. I think Tee's offense + a Venables defense would be a great combo. And both Tee and Venables are considered excellent recruiters. So, overall, I like the idea of going after Venables.

Son could play at Tennessee under HC Venables. Hard for me to believe that a big shot assistant doesn't want the challenge or money of a big time HC gig.

Fulmer may have just not reached out to Venables yet, because he appears to be looking under every rock and down every hole......get em Phil:)

That is true, but he has a nice gig right now with hardly any job security pressure. I think some guys are ok with being a coordinator, but you're completely right that he might be interested in the job. Obviously all head coaches started out as coordinators or assistant coaches. It is just all about personal preference and I guess nobody knows other than Venables.

Why hire someone that will leave when their dream job opens up? Isn't Snyder like a hundred years old?

Would get messy imo. With the early signing date and Clemson the leader for our former hometown superstar commit? And would he want to stay on for the playoffs? That said, Im in! Bring it! :)

I knew that guy in my time at UT. No clue that he is now a reporter though. Only knew him casually.

Venables is the man behind the curtain in Clemson.

Clemson had 0% chance of being who they are right now until Dabo went to Oklahoma and snagged him away. From that moment on, Clemson has been a contender. Period.

Dabo was at Clemson for years and never did much of anything. A 10 win season and a historic Orange Bowl loss and a meaningingless (at that time) ACC championship is about it, then Venables came in and completely changed who that team was. There is a reason Dabo has even refused a raise just to be able to make sure venables was paid more money.

With all that being said: he doesn’t want a HC gig. He’s a Bud Moore all the way. His one son is a cheerleader at Clemson. He’s not leaving Pickens county unless Dabo does.

If we can take Venables from Clemson, they will not be as dominant defensively and then we might be able to put them back in their place, recruiting wise. That, at least makes it tempting. I’m all for stealing Clemson’s staff.

Venables has been surrounded by winning programs (Bob Stoops and Dabo) and knows the formula to winning football games.

Did yall watch his defense against Miami? Holy **** that D is as good or better than Bama's. Just imagine that defense at Tennessee.

Venables would be a solid hire.

He’s a winner.

Pure & simple.
