In 1998 when he was at Kansas State, the Wildcats were playing Texas A&M in the Big 12 championship game as the No. 2 team in the country.


Venables interviewed for a job at Oklahoma the week leading up to the game, and the Wildcats ended up blowing a 15-point fourth quarter lead and losing in double overtime.

“Everybody goes, ‘Oh, they were distracted,’ ” Venables recalled. “And I hadn’t decided yet if I was going to leave Kansas State to go to Oklahoma. ... But my name and that time of my career has always been tied to that loss. It might’ve been the most devastating loss that I’ve been a part of because, had we won, we’re playing in the national championship probably against Tennessee. And I just did not like that association.”

A couple of years later when Venables was at Oklahoma, he had an opportunity to interview for the Missouri head coaching job as the Sooners were preparing to play for the Big 12 title, but he opted not to after the experience at Kansas State. He added that he has maintained that philosophy throughout his coaching career since the Wildcats lost the Big 12 title in 1998.

So Clemson being in the CFP, if he's a man of his word, he's probably not even interviewed.

Doesn't he have kids at Clemson? I think he's turned down numerous jobs in the past.

Man, I hope that's not the case. Of all of the candidates rumored to be finalists, Venables is #1 in my book. Solid, extensive track record of success at OK and Clemson, plus this guy has the charisma and personality to win recruits and the press conference.

Whats so "telling" about it? That he probably hasnt interviewed?

I'd take him over any of the other mentioned candidates. I think he'd make a hell of a HC.

he's been on record for a while about his desire to remain a dc...becoming a hc has never been a big ambition for him. i've always like the idea of what he could bring, but that was always the question with him...does he really want to be a head coach?

Lord knows he's probably had multiple opportunities. and he hasn't jumped yet. so barring something tangible, he probably never made it past the guaging interest phase.

Those were conference championships. If Venables wants a head coaching gig he'll take one real soon.

So I guess Venables needs for Clemson to have a very bad year and not make a bowl game in order for him to consider a HC job.

Offer enough $$$$ for him and all the $$$$ he needs to hire great coaches that are also great recruiters and he'll come.

It's easy to make a spot on the roster for his son.

Go get him Fulmer!

maybe he hasn't jumped at being a HC because he didn't feel it was right for him. Maybe the VOLS are, & we finally get our big time coach. We've paid our penance for firing Fulmer. a decade of putrid is enough. Please let us get this right.

If we're going to take a chance on a DC, why not this guy? Much better than Steele or Pruitt. Much better resume than Tucker. Seems like a no brainer.

Besides ego, why would he want a HC job? He's making about $140,000/month without all the stress that comes with being a HC. I know it's a struggle to live off $140,000/month, but I am sure he makes do.
