Boswell heading to the portal

This was bound to happen. It's a move likely best for both sides. We were always going to recruit guards that can more consistently score in the portal. Boswell would have been relgated to 6th or 7th man at best. Elsewhere he can potentially get more rope to be a bigger part of the offense. Would be great to see him at NC State.

It makes being sports fans of your college really hard. What’s the point in getting highly regarded recruits, when they leave for nba or nil to another college. It’s sad times

No since in spending big money on recruiting, let other teams pay for it and use the money you saved, and rent the kid right out from under them

Not upset with this. His defense was solid, but almost a non factor offensively

Will miss him on defense.

Not sure that I would classify him as a solid or a good defender. Lots of guards had career days against us this season.

He was particularly adept at fouling 3pt shooters and putting his body on people with his hands down by his side to get fouls called on him.

Zakai and Jahmai were the last of their kind at UT?

At least temporarily, yes. Until actual reforms happen to the system, I would imagine there likely will never be a 4-year player to start and end their career at Tennessee. The moment someone shows potential, a more desperate program is going to overpay to secure their services to jump start the rebuild.

I don’t think this will last forever. At some point, whether it’s 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years down the line major reforms will happen. But at least for now you likely aren’t going to see another Zakai or Jahmai wear orange.

If I'm a coach in today's environment, here's how I think you have to handle it. Focus most of your recruiting on the portal to improve your chance of getting players that are ready to contribute immediately. If you can get a lottery type guy out of high school, go for it. Point being, you have to approach it as if every player is going to most likely be with you for one year, maybe two max. Once the roster is set, make a reasonably quick determination of who your key players will be. Once you've done that, make sure you don't waste any resources on developing the players who are not key contributors, because you're going to be developing them for the competition, in all likelihood. Sucks that this is how it has to be, but that's where we're at.
Side note: I think Barnes has figured this out and largely follows this approach.

The sky isn’t falling, Barnes will make moves in the portal and pick up some good players just like he does every offseason. Come November there will be a talented squad wearing the power T taking the court. Don’t lose sleep over portal crap, cheer for the ones who show up in 7 months. I like Boz and Estrella but both are replaceable.

I appreciate his effort and toughness but he is not a P4 shooting guard. He would be great for Gainey as a program/culture guy, same with Phillips and Estrella (injured constantly)

Eventually everyone is going to run out of money. You can't have NFL or other pro sport level pay for a dozen players on college basketball teams or at least 50 or more on football teams. I think Danny White saw this coming. That's why in the last couple of years they really started pumping fans to spend more on UT. Directly or tangentially. Everyone says Kim Caldwell losing the whole roster because she is abrasive or whatever and that Summitt would have never lost her team. Guarantee you if she coached in a world like this is becoming, a lot of her players would have left too. They just couldn't because there wasn't money involved and they weren't allowed to transfer like this. This is becoming a watershed of larger society as a whole. Gimme mine. This is way bigger than just players getting paid. This is an indicator of a larger issue.

There are some who will defend til the death this s*** show that is the nil
I would hope that it is a whole lot more than "some". Our country was founded on individual liberty and pursuit of happiness. I would hope that most still support that even when it causes instability in our entertainment industries.

Poor Abby Conklin might have! And she would have regretted it.

As I've said many times before, this is the sort of thing that reminds me that it's not unreasonable to ask one's self what it is we're cheering and supporting these days. Twenty years ago, I got it. But now? I don't think I get it so much now.
Totally agree with you, being a fan now is an exercise in futility. I'm just glad I got to root and watch players that went to a team and stuck it out till the end. I get that its all became money ball and partly on the fanbase and its became sleazy culture some of the best coaches are basically sleazy ppl. UF & LSU retread coach's Bruce Pearl etc.. and their all lauded because they win by hook or crook, its the bottom line.
Yep I felt this way about NBA just after Bird & Magic days just doesn't interest me at all, not watched a full NBA game in the whole 2000s. See some clips on sports center about it. I'm starting to get apathetic about College ball across the board.

I’m really hating college sports. It’s just ridiculous that this chaos was allowed to happen.
I agree, it is an old timey way of thinking, but this is the new college sports. Complete roster change every year, with EVERYTHING based off of money.

College sports were about more than just winning at all costs. They bleed fans dry to pay for all this and then want more. Most average families can't afford to go to games anymore. More, more, more.
Exactly. Keep thinking a little deeper and you’ll realize this has always been a business . The schools run the business and collect the money. After they knew players were eventually going to get revenue sharing, they created NIL, talent fees, etc. to add income to offset their additional operating costs.
