Lots of people have said they won't support football that's a pro model because as employees the student portion of the equation is hard to legally justify.

If the players are pro athletes employed by the school, why should they be students? And if they are employees, why should they be limited to 5 years to play? Are ALL the athletes at the school employees who the school needs to pay?

There are big issues with employee status.

You're right about that, but there's no other viable solution. I see no alternative. The NFL also is invested in the health of college football so it's going to be interesting what happens. I don't think anyone could predict the future of the sport right now. It's not looking promising though.

That's why the NCAA has avoided employee status.

It will actually lead to the end of the student portion of college football. Legally, it will be extremely difficult to argue an employee can only work for 5 years as an athlete when they clearly can still play. It will be difficult to stop schools from hiring 35yo ex NFL players once the 5 years of eligibility disappears.

I'm not saying it's not the future but I'm saying that won't look much like college athletics.

As athlete employees, why should you be able to make them to study something other than the job you're employing them for?

If you're a welder for UT, should your employer be able to make you enroll in music school as part of your job description?

Can Boo even play for Colorado this year? The portal is closed. We’re 4 weeks from the season starting. I highly doubt Heupel would sign off on releasing him and allowing him to transfer and play immediately. Just so short-sighted of a decision kids make. Seems dumb to sit for an entire year and lose valuable development time.

You're right and you're preaching an inevitability. It's going to be really interesting to see how it all goes. Fortunately much of my former passion for the sport is gone so I can watch it more as a casual observer than anyone overly invested. At the end of the day none of this affects my personal life.

If Mike Keith was making fun of TB it would have been more like 3 decades ago. The Titans came to Nashville 28 years ago, Mike actually worked for the still Houston Oilers as a scoreboard host in ‘96 (damn I’m old)

FWIW TB had Mike Keith on the show in the spring for probably an hour for a “welcome home “ event .

I'd hoped after Alston this would take more time so I'd be drooling, diapered, or dead by the time it completely disintegrated.

Unfortunately, Danny White is openly saying collective bargaining is the answer and that's just saying the athletes are employees who need a union. That avoids most Antitrust lawsuits.

I think employee status and collective bargaining will lead to a pro league that has nothing to do with student status for athletes. That will in turn lead to lawsuits about age discrimination for players, how long players can be employed as athletes by the schools, etc.

At this point, as many have said, Congress needs to legislate college into a special Antitrust category..... not quite employees, but able to collectively bargain with age/eligibility limits that are enforceable as exceptions to existing laws.

Only Congress, I know..... Congress is useless, can create those kinds of loopholes in existing laws.

Trump, love his spirit, cannot just create executive orders to override laws. We are still a nation of laws, not a Kingdom.

Congress is way more concerned with the appearance of doing something than actually doing anything difficult. I don't think Congress is the answer to any of this unfortunately. I think Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Opinion where he compared limiting a player's NIL to "wage-fixing" and said you absolutely can't do it, opened Pandora's Jar and there's no getting the lid back on. While legally, it's obviously sound, the complications to "amateur" sports are readily apparent now as the teams with the biggest payrolls are destined to dominate the sport. Fans are already losing interest. I keep up with other fan bases and had been watching Auburn's boards. There was some activity around when their AD and coach came out and said everyone but them was cheating but it died down pretty quickly and there's far less traffic on their boards than there normally is. Fan bases will lose interest. They will stop buying tickets, merchandise, and tuning into watch period in many cases. Many fans of these teams of have nots have no other team they care about following.

Some might like having an education. I'm not for giving one to them if they are getting paid.

Then you cut the tie completely with the school. It is no longer the University of Tennessee Volunteers but the Knoxville something and that entity that hires them has to either build new facilities or buy / pay to use the ones on campus. Bottom line there would need to be some connection between the school and the student employee or the connection to the college is gone.

What some fail to remember is that it is the connection to the college and the long-standing traditions that make college football what it is. Without it is just a "local" team that only the "locals" care about. Turning them into employees with no defined connection to the college becomes minor league football - not college football.

Of course, the colleges could turn things around and charge for the use of their "Name, Image and Likeness" and I dare say the "Tennessee Brand" or the "Alabama Brand" or the "OSU Brand" is worth a lot more for the marketing angle than a gamble on an athlete that may or may not pan out.

There is not much different between the sports model and the model in place for the medical systems associated the universities. Those systems have employees, and they also are training hospitals for students that will at some point either work for the hospital or take up their own practice.

The schools can lease the stadium, training facilities, logo, etc and that is the connection.

Like a lot of medical facilities tied to schools, the hospital is a separate entity tied by name, financial support, and by use as an educational facility to the school. The Athletic Dept is very separate and I believe UK has created an LLC that is their Athletic Dept. I'm unsure of the legal specifics of all those facilities and whatnot as I'm not an attorney.

It gets messy in my mind and, as usual, the ones getting rich in the end are the lawyers sorting it all out.

A better solution is Congress getting an Antitrust Exemption and specific legal standing for college athletes and athletic programs. Button it down, let the athletes and schools bargain about eligibility, money, transfers, etc without a court case popping up every few months to challenge the rules.

Explain, potentially harmful? Do you think Boo is looking at VN or other media for his decision on what to do or do you think he's actually talking to his people and Coach Heupel?

What is your "potential harm" from a bunch of fans gossiping over rumors?

It's been proven in the past that players do look at these threads. I'm sure this escapes you, but we are talking about 18-22 year old kids that live on social media. So seeing their name dragged through the mud does have an adverse effect. It also means oftentimes coaches have to talk them, their parents, and others off a ledge. If you had ever played competitive sports at a high level, you would know the importance of keeping team related news in house. Besides that, rumors and gossip are generally for little old ladies.

Historically, VN disagrees about rumors and gossip and so does most of the sports, politics, and business world.

Besides that, the young athletes know that we're a bunch of old fans who have 40 times they could beat running backward. We're not their target audience unless you're following their Instagram, X, Snapchat, or whatever they use and they, if my kids and grandkids are any indication, find us completely out of touch with their stresses and concerns and largely unable to understand the slang and butchered English social media tends to contain when young folks use it.

You give us and yourself too much gravitas in these kid's lives. When have you EVER heard a rumor or fact that a player saw crap on social media from fans and decided to leave, stay, or whatever?

I've heard of PARENTS getting on social media and mixing it up but I'm seriously doubtful players are any different than my younger family members who look at me and my posts like "Pops, did you take your Metamucil last night? You seem a little irritable today......"

If players do actually read this message board crap then they would be laughing their butts off at some of the ridiculous stuff posted on here.
