Bob Shoop hypes up former five-star recruit poised for big season on Rocky Top

In anticipation for fall camp, McKenzie dropped over 20 pounds this offseason. Following the weight loss, Shoop described his defensive tackle as being ‘in the best shape of his life.’
“Kahlil’s done a really good job,” Shoop said Friday according to Wes Rucker of Go Vols Xtra 247. “He’s gotten his body into shape. He’ll never be really light, because he’s got such a large lower body — I mean, an incredibly large lower body — but he’s really improved his athletic ability.
“He’s in the best shape of his life, and I think he’s excited and ready to go.”

The more I see Shoop talk up our defenders (and defense in general), the more I get the sense that he knows we're gonna have an elite unit in 2016 and he doesn't care to be coy about it.

He's pumping up these guys and stoking their confidence as individuals. Psychologically it's brilliant, IMHO.

Indeed, I think Shoop is able to think outside the box and his players enjoy and thrive off it.....I may be more excited about the defense than the offense of team 120 and a big reason is Bob Shoop

I mean hey Phil Steele projects us to have a top 10 run defense nationally as well as scoring defense. I respect that man's estimates over nearly all else.

SDS starts off the piece a little off kilter. They made it sound like the KM hype was unanimous up till the opener. Not so. A lot of people with sense knew that he was a true FR and had missed an entire year of FB. Then he showed up sloppy overweight. A lot of fans who pay attention suspected he may not go beast mode in 15'.

Along that subject. Is anyone else surprised that Khalil came in out of shape the way he did? All SEC DTs are gonna struggle some as true FR, especially after a layoff. But what shocked me was that being a legacy, with a VFL uncle, and NFL GM father, with access to pro staff and facilities etc ... allowed him to not be somewhat physically ready when he hit campus. Not casting blame, but of anyone in that class I would not have expected KM to arrive like that. Obviously an unfounded idea that I had.

He didn't play for an entire year prior to coming to UT. That had to have some impact on him.

There's in shape and "game shape". If he had to sit out a year and then get back on a high school football field he would have picked up where he left off but the speed of the college game made that a bit harder for him. He looked good against lesser teams on the schedule last year but still didn't quite live up to the billing some thought he would last year. He's had a year to adjust to it and cut some weight and get in "game shape". I look forward to seeing him live up to that 5 star rating this year.

Tennessee will be able to just plug and play on the D-Line this year. Too many weapons. Teams won't know how to scheme.

Sounds like the whole team is in the best shape of their life. One heck of an off-season in the weight room did plenty of good. Beasts all over the place...gonna be a tough year on our opponents...:)

GO VOLS!

I had the same idea myself. I knew he had a year off from football but he had access to NFL facilities, staff, and players to help him be in game shape and a dad and uncle to pick their brain for what to expect and what he needs to do before walking onto campus.

I wasn't thinking, he's just a kid that prob enjoyed a little time not busting his butt everyday.

There ain't no doubt he has it in his mind this year cuz he don't even look the same as he did when he came to UT.

I'm thinking he makes a pretty big impact this year in shape and under Shoop. He just has to remain healthy and he will do fine I bet.

Yet if he didn't believe it, he'd be an idiot for doing it. Never set expectations you feel you can't keep. A questionable year on D, after pumping up your talent, and it's your neck on the line.

I don't see a reason why this defense shouldn't live up to expectations given the talent they're bringing back.

Nor I. That was basically my point. Obviously, it's not 'just' a psychological ploy. Shoop must also believe it, or he'd stroke their egos in private while going all "Dooley" to the press. :hi:

This is where my head was and is about KMac. The youngster and his family are VFLs and this youngster will have a special season, hopefully this one before leaving The Hill. When's he's right, not one of his peers can stop him in college football.

He has never been sloppily overweight. Not even close..

He was training in preparation , but he needed to be around our culture to realize just how hard he should have been training.

Exactly, I kinda feel like he compliments Butch in that Butch really tries to temper down the hype/expectations to focus on the daily grind. Shoop doesn't shy away from verbalizing the potential of his defense or praising his players' abilities. I think it's a good balance to have among the staff.

The term "defenders" got me thinking. I think the sign of a really spectacular defense is when the defenders become the "offenders". With a jail break mad rush to the QB and RB on every play, the opposing team's offense will have to go into a defensive mode. That certainly changes the whole dynamic of the game. That's what we saw in the Super Bowl with Denver. They didn't sit back and "defend" they attacked the whole game and it paid off. This is what Shoop will bring to the table and he's got the guys to do it. It's going to be fun.

This^

It's enough between the 2 (Jones & Shoop) to keep the players grounded and hungry, not cocky but confident in their ability. Also should make them play that much harder for Shoop cuz of him taking notice in their talent.

I think it's awesome with a coach as respected as Shoop for knowing talent and a great defense when he see's one to be so excited about this defense and talk up how good he thinks they are and believe enough to say so publicly mult times now.

I know him saying their good don't win games but it does make me smile 😊
