Blade Tidwell

Maybe Tuesday
Why would you start him? Why? Because everyone is rushing him back on this board? They have zero reason to start him, or work him hard, until he's built back up slowly without reaggravating his shoulder. Blade is awesome, and if he doesn't get a start before the middle of May I'd be fine with that if we continue to play at this level. I'd much rather have him fresh for tourney time, than pitching against Lipscomb in a meaningless OOC game.

Well, if you want him to start in May he needs to start these games and build his pitch count up. These games are perfect for that. Pitchers can throw all the bullpens they want, but theres nothing like live action at bats.

They won’t run him out there for 6 innings. He’ll get a few innings, but you have to build up his arm and mental focus. He worked back from soft toss to a midweek start. This is a conservative path. DVH would’ve had him going 7 innings against South Carolina

Start? Or extended relief? No difference in live action or in pitch counts. There's a fascination on this board with starting him in the next weekend series and bumping one of the other starters to a midweek role. That's insanity. It's like they want to break something so they can "fix" it. It's a great problem to have, but the weekend rotation hasn't shown me anyone I'd pull in favor of Blade coming off of an injury.

I haven't seen anyone calling for that at the present time. I think most everyone knows he's going to need some of these outings to get him prepared for a weekend spot...and if/when he gets to that point, we can have a conversation about whose spot he takes.

No doubt they are working on getting him ready asap but in the context of his rehab . We don't know when he will be needed.

Oh, there's plenty of posts in multiple threads about which starter he's going to bump in the weekend rotation and as soon as possible. I love Blade, he was a beast last year, but he's going to have to earn his way into the weekend rotation THIS year. Injuries aren't fair, but life isn't fair either. I'm sure there's a ton of teams who would like to have this conundrum.

There is a difference. You want your starters to get accustomed to the routine of starting. We have lots of relievers. Let them come in in relief when needed.

I was once of the opinion he should be brought along slowly progressing, then insert him into the weekend rotation. I no longer feel that way after seeing the starters perform the past two series against such quality competition. I think he should start the midweek games, work his pitch count up to 100 gradually, and then be available in case one of the starters gets injured (God forbid) or becomes ineffective. As long as the weekend starters keep doing what they're doing, we should leave well enough alone.

Yeah I’ve argued with a couple people about this and I think I’m on the losing end at this point. I still think Tidwell is a stud, but I don’t think you can mess with the rotation until someone gives you a reason to. I think he has to be in the weekend bullpen though. You can’t go from pitching against the Lipscombs, Tenn Techs, Bellarmines to being the 4th starter in postseason play against an Arkansas, LSU, Texas lineup. I don’t know how you juggle needing 70+ live pitches and needing top competition though.

Well, with this team's weekend starting rotation, he'll only get a couple of innings out of the pen. Those starters eat up at least 7 and sometimes 8 or more a game. I think he's going to have to get stretched out midweek.

Stretched out midweek, yes. But that should be a means to an end. ZVols is right…you’re wasting Tidwell’s talent if you’re just using him in midweek games. The goal should be to get him ready to pitch on weekends.
