The sports station here in Knoxville had a lengthy interview with Kevin Scarbinsky, a sports writer from Birmingham yesterday about the future of ALABAMA football. To boil it down, he said that the reason Bamam couldn't win vs. Florida and Utah was that Saban still only has a year and a half of his recruits on board. So there was a talent gap vs. Florida and not enough depth to handle the suspension and injuries vs. Utah. He really sounded high on Bama, though -- said to give Saban another recruiting class or two, and that then Bama will legitimately threaten for the National Champ every year.

What do you think of that and does our new coaching staff have a shot at stemming the Tide?

I would say he is spot on, and I hope our new staff can derail the Crimson Tide.

I would agree with that, but I also think UT is in that same boat. Give Lane 3-5 years and we will be competing for championships.

I hope you're right. I don't want the SEC to turn into a two-team league, with UA and Florida being penciled in for the championship game every year.

UF will be good next year, possibly winning a NC again. They are losing Harvin which hurts their chances slightly. I think in 2 years, Tebow is gone and Urban Meyer will go to Notre Dame. I also think Charlie Strong will be coaching elsewhere. I think that will open the door for us to move into the top spot in 3-5 years.

Alabama will still have LSU to contend with and they are recruiting like crazy. Ole Miss is getting better, Arkansas is looking to improve and Auburn is putting together a good staff. Miss St brought in a spread HC and that might give Bama some problems. I don't doubt that Bama will be the favorite most years but it will still be very difficult for them to be in the SECC every year.

yep the West is definitely on the up whilst the East is on the down slope...except UF.

It is my fervent hope that the bama nation continues to step on their daubers until they implode!

Remember, all of the media are intimidated by Saban and will kiss up to him to bitter end. Did Alabama have less talent than Utah?

Yep, and the talent gap was compounded by the fact that the players apparently didn't give a rip about the game.

i dont necessarily buy that. his LSU teams were very good but they didnt compete every year for a title. More than not but not every year

This is correct. Remember this guy is from Birmingham. If he wrote something critical, the bammers might run him out of the state right now. The line to kiss Saban's backside is a long one around those parts.

Gimme a break. No SEC team will do that every year. Look at Florida last year. They didn't even sniff national title. It's hard for me to believe any team can do this. I'd settle for an SEC championship 2-3 times every decade. And in the BCS era, and SEC championship means you have a 45% chance of winning it all.

Im willing to bet that at some point Saban takes another run at the NFL.

I don't think Saban will go anywhere as long as he's being successful at Bama. I know he was successful at LSU before going to the NFL, but he got his arse handed to him in the NFL... I don't think he'll take another shot. Some guys are just meant to coach college ball.

He has a huge ego. Once he obtains success at Alabama, he will want to prove his detractors wrong and will jump to the NFL.
