I think her not accepting her children (and really, the whole movie) is a commentary about how scary and daunting parenthood can be in a dangerous world. But she realizes at the end in naming her kids that you can’t just withhold love out of fear you’ll lose them. At least that was my interpretation

She was disconnected from her baby in the hospital before everything went to hell though. It was only dangerous after that.

Well yeah, cause for a parent, the world is always dangerous. The “creatures” I think are an allegory for all the unseen dangers in the world (or, I’m looking too much into it)
